use a real Wiki on this site?
« on: October 09, 2005, 07:11 PM »
Hi,

when I just thought about the great ideas Stefan posted on https://www.donation...index.php?topic=1123 an idea came up: what about adding a real Wiki to this great site? You could use the Wikipedia Wiki code for free (please don't consider using an inferior wiki) and setup a wiki with an address like https://www.donationcoder.com/wiki/

This could replace the help in the programs or just be an add-on for that.

Benefits:
  • users can add hints/screenshots/help
  • users can help to maintain it
  • it's a better way to store up-to-date info than a forum (note: not to discuss in it, just to store the outcome)

This is just an idea... kill it or make more out of it

definitely an interesting idea.. i know a little about wikis but not as much as i should - let me read up a little more and try to think how we might use it.  as you say it's probably best suited for storing the latest up-to-date information of some sort.. using it to replace the file file is a very interesting idea in general..

I really like my wiki. Here's more info on what types are availble for use. Many are freeware or open source.

I vote for MediaWiki

If mouser could manage to set it up would be great... working with it it very easy and many know how to do it already.

Exactly :) Read my first post above? ;)

A good wiki would be perfect to let (registered) users add their "how to do this" screenshots and explanations.

For fear of repeating myself - a wiki could be used for ...

FAQs
Documentation project for site apps (including coding snacks etc.)
Tips and Tricks
Quick find links for software types/functions/categories etc.

My only worry would be the amount of maintenance necessary and the potential for abuse?

How do WikiPedia cope with these issues?

Well, I'm an administrator in two not-that-small MediaWiki-based wikis myself and because of spam-bots and annoying kids we just switched to "only users with an account may edit the wiki". We administrators can quickly setup new accounts (using IRC to let people ask for an account) and it works like a charm!

I won't tell in here, but if you are curious enough you'll find out over time :D

PS: It's kinda cool when you see that a page that you added reaches 100000 page views in a few weeks only :)

It was easy enough to find at least one. What the heck in Azureus? The site doesn't have an "About" page.

I think it might be nice for them to say that on the front page of the wiki. I actually looked for a few minutes there trying to figure out just what they were up to.

I should have just googled the name.  (duh!)

BrotherS will get right on that one I bet, LOL
