48 Proof Beer: On Sale Soon!
« on: December 08, 2007, 01:24 PM »
My heroes at Samuel Adams have brewed a 48 proof (24% alcohol) beer.  Finally.

http://www.realbeer....eerbreak20020214.php

samadams_utopiasmm.jpg

This directly addresses my complaints about regular beer, that you can drink a six-pack or two and still operate a car.  With a six-pack of this stuff in your system you'll be lucky to make it to the ambulance.

My god!  24% alcohol!  I've had weaker straight shots in some bars.  Medical practitioners will use this to sterilize things because not only does it kill germs, its foaming action cleans and brightens.

All hail our new beer overlords!

Why in the world would you want this? I love beer. I love having a couple of beers at a time. I'd hate to have to quit after 1/3 of a beer.

This seems like a ploy to appear upscale and sell beer for an extremely premium price. I mean, come on, who drinks beer from a brandy snifter?

48 proof! I find Belgian beer hard to drink and it's in the 7.5 to 10% alcohol range. I suspect that 24% alcohol is going to be unpalatable, at least for me  :o

I've had beer that was either 25% or 27% --- I forget now as it was so long ago. But it was from Belgium, and yes... It was pure evil!  :rip: :onfire: :stars:

Reading the article:

Sam Adams Utopias MMII, which goes on sale this month, is in fact 24% alcohol by volume, making it the strongest commercial beer in the world.

Not a doubt there. The beer I had was in the "Vintages" section of the liquor store. Most likely a small batch and not really what you'd call "commercial" in the sense of mass production.

I couldn't drink the stuff. I split it with 2 other people!

Read any of the comments on the beer forum at the original link?  They're split between "that's gotta taste nasty" and "meh"... kind of like here.  And that's a BEER forum.

I have no idea what sick game Sam Adams is playing at.  A 24% alcohol product would be something you'd expect from the Gomez Addams brewery, but whatever... clearly there's a market for it since all the 21% beer got snatched up before.

Personally, my interest tops out well below 7% since thats when it starts tasting like beer with a dash of solvent.

Some 8% (vol) beers are fine, but above that (with the beers I've tried) you either enter the stout realm (struggle to get it down, struggle to keep it down) or beers that's more like wine.... I prefer my beers around 5%, with the occasional enjoy-a-single-or-two 8%.

strong stout/porter can be nice
-
generally the stronger it is = the sweeter it is
guess it depends on taste ?!

...and if you want something for the thirst, you're in big trouble here :D

I LOVE stout! However, I doubt that I've ever had any greater than about 4.5%, so can't comment on stronger ones...

IPA's over here, both american and British varieties.  The hoppier the better.

Well, except for Hop Devil or Tupper's Hop Pocket... those are kind of extreme.

I'm a bit of an all-round beer fan - love the IPA's as well!

At the moment, though, I'm really into the Irish Cream Ales.

was thinking IPA rings a bell somewhere...

google found me this..
The International Phonetic Alphabet now has its own beer!

but of course now I remember - I drank it on holiday in Canada actually -
it made it to india but not to ireland...
[for those who dont know it's india pale ale - sent out to india keep the colonists happy]

Irish Cream Ales is a relatively new thing to me -
years ago, a mix of guinness and smithwicks ale (which isnt creamy - in ireland at any rate) produced a "Black & Tan"
which was something similar - but darker, naturally

sort of off topic :-\ the name smithwicks never made it to germany because it sounds like this

There's a locally produced Irish Cream Ale that's very nice, but my favourite is Kilkenny, which is apparently very similar to Mo........... er, Smithwicks. I *must* try a Black and Tan. Right, off to the liquor store! Actually, we keep getting ever more imported beers here and I'm pretty sure that I can get Smithwicks so will give that a try as well.

Mike, I'd say it'd be nice with any ale - I guess the mix was the origin of the "Cream ales" idea -
cause they never had creamy heads [way] back then
but I'm not sure...

:) Sláinte anyways :drinksmiley:
