EverNote - Free today at GAOTD

[sri]

EverNote is one of the best programs I've ever used. The full version of it is free for 24 hrs at http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/evernote/

EverNote allows you to easily capture any information you like, and find it whenever you want. Create text or handwritten notes, import mobile phone snapshots, clip web pages, and grab content from any application directly into EverNote - so everything is kept in a single place.

Once your data is in EverNote, find it quickly using our advanced search, automatic and custom categories, and intuitive interface.

EverNote innovates by storing content on an endless, virtual roll of paper. You can quickly scroll chronologically through your notes similar to scanning through handwritten notes in a notebook.

Grab it while it's free.

Darn it. You beat me to it Sri. It's not fair. You need to move to California so your day comes after mine and not a half a day earlier.

Downloading now! Woo hoo!

The readme.txt within the .zip states:

You have to install it before the Giveaway offer for the software is over.

Does this mean if I don't get around to installing it right away it won't work?

Well... yes and no. The important thing is to run the activate.exe file during the 24 hour period. Of course, enterprising individuals might just run a program during this process to identify the changes that this makes to your registry. But I'll leave the why's and the wherefores to your imagination.

Like others here, I was dismayed to find myself beaten to the punch by not only sri, but tinjaw as well!

EDIT: added missing word "registry"

Could everyone please check that deals have not already been posted before repeating posts. Thanks.

Actually, I think they also tweak the installer itself to "phone home" to check that the offer is still active.

Regarding the app itself, I dislike the "toilet paper" model.

I have been using Surfulater, but I've been having problems with the files corrupting when syncing with my flash drive (a single database is composed of multiple files, and if I forget to close the app, they don't all copy, so they get out of sync).

Evernote, on the other hand, appears to have its own built-in sync feature.

It built in OCR looks pretty cool (I think that's been mentioned around here before).

Support for Google desktop search is cool, but I use Copernic.

Yes, but in order to sync, you have to also purchase the USB version. Sycn works very well though.

[sri]

Does anyone know how to enable internet synchronization?

[edbro]

I believe that is a placeholder for a future function. They have a site called My Evernote but it hasn't launched yet.

I have been synching between desk and laptop via a USB stick and it doesnt need the USB version to work.

True enough. I was only thinking of my situation where I carry my database around on my USB drive. And CWuestefeld mentioned synching to his USB drive. If you want to keep 2 desktops in sycn then I think that's all you need.

Regarding the app itself, I dislike the "toilet paper" model.

Although I also dislike the TP model, some of my coworkers believe that most of what I write is complete crap and is best suited for toilet paper.

That may be so, but it's hard to stop when you're on a roll!

thanks for the hint

Evernotes seems to activate using this Link in your Browser: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/evernote/?activate (I hope)

Till now I didn´t see clear what is stored this way. Perhaps nothing? It could be one of these two cookies or the certification file... In EverNotes itself I cannot find a damn hint if it is now registered or not - and the time is ticking. How can I see if my installation is now registered or not?!?!?!

[Darwin]

Evernote doesn't provide any visual clue that it has been activated or that it's running in Plus mode. I *think* that the free version says that it is free in the about page, but am not sure. I've been running it for so long I no longer remember.

RE: activation, the activate.exe file actually "phones home" to GATD and returns information that is written to your registry. This must be done during the 24 hour giveaway period. The information written to your registry unlocks the software/provides the licence key for the software.

I'm not so sure. I have a full version so I haven't tried this giveaway version. But, for the full version I own, there are no reg codes. It is simply a full version executable that is delivered to us. Also, on another website, somebody wrote the following:

This is correct, I unzipped the setup file with a note from GFOTD after unzipping and checking with the GFOTD website it unpacked a new setup file, I copied the new setup file to a flash drive and installed on two other computers, ( no badgering, or demo warnings, checked the about file under help, seemed to be active. )

OK - I suppose that exactly what the activate.exe file does varies to suit the style of registratoin that the s/w authors use. In Evernote's case the installer has likely been modified so that it will NOT run in the absence of whatever it is that activate.exe writes to the registry. Anyway, you can tell what activate.exe does by running an app like Total Uninstall or Ashampoo Uninstaller before and after you run it.
