Big day for FARR releases..

You can now specify that certain search folders should only match against certain file extensions (you can use this along with modifier keywords to help you narrow search to certain folders and file types easily with the +keyword approach).

You can also now specify a prefix that will turn on or off matching against aliases - J-Mac this is for your problem.  Using this you can for example set a prefix of ! and now it will never match against aliases+plugins unless you start by typing ! and when you do that it will ONLY match against aliases+plugins.  Useful if you like to be in control of when it matches against aliases+plugins or not.

I've also attempted to improve dialog autosizing with skins.. i HOPE i haven't broken anything here but i may have -- let me know if FARR is autosizing wrong for you now and was working before.

Nice work, mouser.

I still can't get the non-contiguous searching to work. I must be doing something stupid. But what?

I don't know why, but when I type ffox, firefox doesn't show.

The shortcut name for FireFox is "Mozilla Firefox.lnk"

What am I doing wrong? Or is there a conflicting option that I've selected?

AFAICT, the only option affecting non-contiguous searching/scoring is the "score non-contiguous matches" option.

i know what it is, you've got the "Check full path for search words even when not using \ characters" option checked.. i'm going to try to make it work with that, please hold for an update to follow.

Mouser, that's it. Thanks.
I'll disable the ""Check full path..." option for now... just to have fun with the non-contiguous searching. It's great BTW, really great. I'm not too bad as a typist, but... I tend to make small mistakes...

Whoa! Big weekend for FARR .

Regarding the file extension restrictions it might also be useful to be able to specify which file extensions NOT to include. I found this useful when setting up Locate32 where for example there were only 1-2 filetypes i didnt want to include and include everything else. Maybe by using a "-" before the extension i.e -bak;-tmp. Def not a priority for me though.

s.newave, that is already done, almost exactly as you say (except that you only specify one - at the very begining of the string).

It looks like i need to turn off the non-contiguous (fuzzy) matching when an alias is typed, to cut down on garbage results.

This adds a long requested feature, non-contiguous matching.
So searching for "ffox" will match "fire fox".

Hope you like it!
Absolutely! Very helpful feature.

I love this program, my main launcher for a long time.

However I think I'm too much of a minimalist to use it with the status bar being displayed all the time now.

just uncheck the upper right checkbox to turn off all use of aliases in a given file.

or wait a few days for me to implement that feature im talking about.

Mouser,

You posted the quoted reply in response to my query about stopping all the other stuff showing up when I am just trying to launch programs with FARR.

So far the subsequent releases have only made it worse for what I am doing.  I haven't really used FARR as a pure search tool, but only as an application launcher.  Each release makes it harder and harder to use FARR as a launcher.

I guess I misunderstood your quote above. I thought that FARR was going to have a setting that would make it useful once again as a program launcher.  Yet at this point, using the latest version - even with ALL aliases turned off - I type in the first four or five letters of a program name and the first .lnk from the Start Menu is almost always no higher than 8th or 10th on the results list.  Instead I see junk that I in no way wish to open.  I realize that I am not checking the results list as carefully as I need to mainly because FARR used to present me with the program shortcut that I wish to launch, almost flawlessly.  Now it is much more likely that I am going to start the setup file to reinstall that program than to launch the program.

I realize that these extra search features are more popular among members here and so you are catering more to those members.  But if FARR is no longer going to be as useful as it once was as a pure program launcher, please just say so plainly.  That way I can give up on it and start using a real program launcher.

Thanks!

Jim

If you set the optional alias prefix to something other than blank, then farr should only match against stuff in your start menu, etc., and not against any aliases.

Screenshot - 8_20_2008 , 12_06_03 AM.png

If you are still seeing results you dont want.. go to your search folders and disable all but the 2 start menu items.

And if you are STILL getting results you dont expect, send me a screenshot or something, because it should be behaving the way you want at this point.

New beta is posted -- i'm leaving it as beta for now as i'm not 100% confident my changes won't cause an issue or two.

Most of the changes are there to help plugin writers, but a few bugs have been corrected here and there.

Hi Mouser,

I was glad to see
[BugFix] - Changing size of window was sometimes being forgotten on restart.
in the release notes. Unfortunately as of 2.43.01 this still isn't fixed. I like to have my FARR window semi-transparent and to take up nearly all the screen space when it comes up. That really looks cool, but it only looks cool when it is centered on the screen and has the same margin left/right top/bottom.
When I resize it into the right form it works for one or maybe two days and then the window gets smaller from the right and bottom and that looks ugly. I still use FARR because of it's funcionality, but it just looks ugly.

Please fix this or maybe provide some settings where one can specify that the window should be centered and what size or even better which margins to the sides of the screen it should have. The last one would in fact be much better as FARR would nicely adjust itself to changing screen resolutions.

Best regards,
  Robert

Hey Mouser,

Just updated from 2.34.01 to 2.45.01, but now the FARR window always stays open after launching anything (just using the Enter key to launch the #1 result). Any thoughts? I have downgraded to 2.34.01 for now.

Running WinXP SP3 (only FarrMilk 0.4.4 as plugin right now, just reinstalled everything).

For centering you could use my FarrMultiMonitor (and center) plugin: https://www.donation....msg117762#msg117762

That wouldn't solve your other problem however...

How did you do that, downgrading? Can I download older versions of FARR somewhere?
