Sounds like a good idea to me, too, although the current layout doesn't really bother me.

I suppose if you do change to a tree view config dialog you could implement this in your other apps too

Hi mouser,

I've been using FARR for a long time, and I'm really happy with FARR v2.00.142.

When I decided to update my copy of FARR to the newest version, unfortunately something went wrong.

I can not launch any of my file, and I find that I can only do so if I type in the whole directory name, e.g C:\Program Files\ProgramName\program.exe. Typing only the shortcut name (program) didn't work, although FARR finds these shortcuts successfully.

For your information, in the About box it says that I'm using version 2.00.145.

I update FARR by simply install the new version over the old one.

EDIT: I uninstalled FARR and reinstall it. Sometimes FARR can launch file, sometimes it can not.

Can you try this:
Go to the "General" tab of options, and change the setting labeled:
"Always launch shortcuts directly instead of resolving links"

If it's checked, uncheck it. If it's already unchecked, check it.

See if that helps.

I experience the same problem today

FARR can not launch some of my programs, e.g MS Word 2007

I checked/unchecked the "Always launch shortcuts directly instead of resolving links" setting but it didn't help.

Any suggestions?

Have you modified your shortcut names in any way? I know I've had problems with file names containing a space as the last caracter (before the file type extension e.g. : "hello .doc"). Farr would find them but not launch them.

Try to find out if there is a common denominator between all these file names/shortcut names farr won't launch.

I'm a little lost on how to get 'noresults' alias working... and couldn't find a complete example of how to set it up - looked in forum and help and google. Is it broken, or do I just not have it configured properly?

I've tried

group alias name: noresults, regex pattern: noresults, result(s): run $$1 | $$1
group alias name: noresults, regex pattern: noresults, result(s): $$1
group alias name: noresults, regex pattern: <empty>, results(s): $$1

none of them work... the first two at least seem to trigger the 'noresults' behavior - farr goes away, but nothing executes. the last one, when you hit enter, nothing happens, and the FARR window doesn't disappear.

I really hope it's just a matter of configuring properly... would love to have it work.

I'm running 2.00.145.

this works for me :

group alias name :
noresults

regex :
noresults (.*)

results :
restartsearch g $$1

g being an other alias of mine that i use to search the web...

ok so perlguy for what you want just put $$1 in results, and use what nitrix said for alias name and regex.

ps. i'm going to split off the noresults discussion into its own thread.

ps2. for those who don't know about the noresults thing, it's how you can tell farr what to do when you type something and there are no results and you hit enter.

i still say thats a bug -- you shouldnt have to put any regular expression in there, it should work right away.
and i should make the noresults entry a default in the myaliases file so users can more easily configure it.

I'm using a Firefox plug-in. A lot

I have a problem with Central European characters which doesn't display correctly. I tried to change font-script to Central European but it doesn't improve the situation. Check the image I send.

I'm using 2.0.0.144.

This is an excellent launcher. Thank you for creating this fine program.

Just a little doubt.

In the older version (1.13.01) I could see a lot of items. I'm used to seeing 27 items together as shown in the screenshot:

In the newer version I can see fewer items at a time. I prefer the list view instead of the detail view so that I could see lots of choices in a relatively small launch window.

I cannot find the list view in the newer version. Is it removed or is it just me?

Just a quick comment. I used Launchy for quite some time, without even knowing that FARR existed. Having found it last week, it has instantly replaced Launchy. It is so unbelievably superior that it's not even worth discussing. At all. Seriously.

Got a couple questions and comments. First off, I haven't run into any problems since installing the latest beta. I haven't exactly been stressing it to the breaking point, though. I'll try harder.

Second - And I may have simply not noticed this feature, so pardon me if I'm just being dumb - But, is there a way to tell FARR to completely ignore a certain filetype extension? I know you can lower a particular extension's weight, which more or less does the same thing if you make the negative value high enough, so maybe it's a waste of time to implement this suggestion. But, if there was a right-click contextual menu entry that said "ignore this filetype extension" or something of that nature, it would be handy.

Third, and this is just a question on mechanics - Does FARR create an index like Launchy and Key Launch. (Key Launch can be found here: http://www.konradp.c...erline_app=keylaunch but it's definitely not as good as FARR)

And lastly, I agree with Arsan's above comment - Although I have never actually used anything other than the current beta of FARR, I do like the idea of being able to see multiple columns as his image depicts, because sometimes I'm looking for an app or document that has a very similar name to others.

Anyhow, great product, light years ahead of everything else in my opinion.

RE ignore file extention:
You can right-click a file and set the pattern to *.FILEEXTENSION, and the score to -9999. That'll make it not come up anymore. It's true that it's not exactly a one-click-ignore-extension solution, but imagine if you had a right-click entry for "ignore pattern", "ignore this file", "ignore this extension", etc

RE index:
No, currently farr doesn't support indexing, but Okke has made the terific locate plugin, which acomplishes something close to that

1) There's the locate plugin, as jgpaiva pointed out. (and to use the plugin efficiently, you could assign a special hotkey to the plugin.)

2) You could also almost "simulate" an index by making the "max. files to keep in launch history" value pretty high (in the "Interface" section of the "options" window) -- mine is now set at 990. But it's an index that's being created as you use farr, so to speak... It will remember all the files you searched or the programs you launched.

I'm not as worried about having an index, mind you, as I was with just finding out of FARR used one or not. I sort of like that it doesn't use one, because I know I'm always dealing with live data. Don't need to worry about refreshing the index if I install a new program or whatnot.

Bottom line is: I don't really FARR to index, as I use it for, well, running stuff. *chuckle* I really only point it at my desktop, my start menu, and one other folder that I keep some odds and ends in. I use Windows Desktop Search if I actually want to find a document of some sort, since it indexes and searches the contents of files. In my book, they are two entirely different concepts. One is an in depth search, and one is a "get my app started as fast as possible without any fuss" program.

I too like the fact that farr doesn't rely on an index.

you might eventually find that farr can be pretty nice to quickly open documents, templates, url, browse directories, copy paths, send emails, paste clips, create new tasks or calendar events, search the web, uninstall programs, etc.

My use of Desktop search programs is mostly for content... Or "serious research". I use Archivarius and X1.

that would be great...
it is one of the very few things i prefer in launchy over FARR

since it helps reducing the number of wrongly searched items
