What's your pet's favorite toy?
« on: April 24, 2007, 02:38 AM »
My cat has a basket full of toys he won't play with. I have spent a fortune on them over the years, till I figured out what he loves most. My cat has all 3 of these (click to read the description...it's great):

(Sorry, but these are not sold any more...they discontinued the series)

Unfortunately they discontinued this one too, or it would be my cat's next toy:

Damn mouser, you beat me to it!
My dog goes berserk over the laser pointer! Gives him an excellent daily workout too. I would like to caution about letting him chase it outdoors where there's traffic though.

On a relative scale...

Every other toy:
--------------------->

Laser pointer:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------->>>>>>
 ;D

I personally also like the thick ropes you can play tug with, they need to be washed more often than the other toys but keep him pretty engrossed and you can get into it too. Also dribbling a 6 inch basketball around and letting him try & get it can be fun for dog and slave (in my case.)

A friend of mine has told me that as far as laser pointers go, red is fine, green can damage a dog's eyes just from looking at the point on the wall/floor/whatever over time.  I have no clue if that is true or not, but just something to think about.

Edit...
Mayo Clinic states that green laser pointers can cause visible damage to the retina if directed into the eyes.  Red laser pointers do not cause damage.  http://www.mayoclini...ws2005-rst/2800.html

My dogs love Nylabones.  The only ones that stand up for more than a day are the non-edible ones.  They are made of a hard nylon.  They shred over time, but the pieces that come off while the dogs are chewing are small enough to pass through their system with no problem.

Also, Kong toys are great.  They are made of hard rubber with a funny shape and a hole in the middle.  My 20 pound terrier chewed through a red Kong (supposedly almost indestructible) in about 1/2 an hour.  The black Kong has lasted about a year.  I stuff dog biscuits in it or smear peanut butter on the inside.  The dogs will go crazy trying to get it out.  My terrier has learned to carry the kong to the top of the stairs and throw it down so that the biscuit breaks up as it bounces down.

Finally, a good soft toy made with imitation lambs wool is always fun.

Squirrels.
It goes like this...

Squirrel is raiding the bird feeder on deck the at the rear of our house, 20 feet up.
German shepherd goes out the front door, round the side of the house, into the back yard, running at full stretch.
Wire-haired fox terrier goes out the back door onto the deck about 30 seconds later.
Squirrel takes flying leap from the deck, to avoid the terrier.
Shepherd, now ideally placed below the deck to behead flying squirrel, misses...every time.
Both dogs rampage around the property trying to appear efficient.
Squirrel sits in nearest tree, laughing.

Just the sight of that innocent looking thing causes my dog untold anxiety and grief.
Reminds me of one of my favorite on screen dialogs.

(From Pulp Fiction)
Vincent: Want some bacon?
Jules: No man, I don't eat pork.
Vincent: Are you Jewish?
Jules: Nah, I ain't Jewish, I just don't dig on swine, that's all.
Vincent: Why not?
Jules: Pigs are filthy animals. I don't eat filthy animals.
Vincent: Bacon tastes gooood. Pork chops taste gooood.
Jules: Hey, sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I'd never know 'cause I wouldn't eat the filthy motherfucker. Pigs sleep and root in shit. That's a filthy animal. I ain't eat nothin' that ain't got enough sense enough to disregard its own faeces.
Vincent: How about a dog? Dogs eats its own feces.
Jules: I don't eat dog either.
Vincent: Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal?
Jules: I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.
Vincent: Ah, so by that rationale, if a pig had a better personality, he would cease to be a filthy animal. Is that true?
Jules: Well we'd have to be talkin' about one charmin' motherfuckin' pig. I mean he'd have to be ten times more charmin' than that Arnold on Green Acres, you know what I'm sayin'?

how about someone here makes a little util which is just pure black screen with red or green laser spot, controllable by mouse or switchable into auto random movement mode.

Because we all know our pets don't want that...they want to buy weapons of mass destruction online while we sleep or work. (at least mine does, which is why I keep him away from the pc)  ;D

Besides, unless you have a crt monitor, cat claws can cause damage.

Hey Mouser, we don't know eachother yet, but April showed me this topic, and i decided to code it for you to mess around with! Haha I was bored man.

This was done in C using the SDL library.
it will show in full screen, and you move the lazer around with your mouse.
also to exit, just hit the escape key!

peace to you all.

Jah made one that you can use your mouse with...but what if you are not around?

Your cat should still be allowed to have some fun, right?

Here is one that is automatic, and moves kind of unpredictably random in both speed and direction.

A screensaver.  :)

I agree on Q-tips and laser pointers. Both are on the cat toplist for sure.

Also, a tiny RC car can be great fun for cats to chase around (and escape from when you turn it around and charge ). Buy the really cheap ones though, because they will break pretty soon. I've seen cats transform into Godzilla at the sight of the RC car.

I've also been thinking of buying a tiny battery driven toy boat and put in the tub after filling it with a few centimeters of water. If I could put some dry food on the boat in a way that makes it hard, but not impossible, to get to then I bet the cat could play with that for quite some time.

My old cat used to love playing with a ping pong sized hard plastic soccer ball in the bathtub (it made a lot of noise)...but the younger cat would always steal it and hide it when he wasn't looking.  :D

Female Border Collie - "Bonnie" - once had a black and white "Teddy bear" until she pulled all the stuffing out of it. Now she walks around with a disheveled black and white material scrap which goes by the name of "Empty Teddy".

You all seem to be limited to dogs and cats (and one wife).
Ever seen a minature shetland pony play with a set of spanners while you're trying to fix the lawnmower that broke down in the middle of the paddock? He plays with anything, especially if it is easily lost or broken, and preferably hard to replace.

I envy you the pony, spanner juggling notwithstanding.
