for big items like monitors you might be better of using something local like craig's list.

« Last post by mouser on December 20, 2008, 05:44 PM »
Well.. the truth can be revealed now.. my program was going to be very similar to another nany app that was planned independently, Kwacky's CrazyLittleFingers: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=16131.0

There's no real reason not to have 2 nany entries on same subject, and kwacky and i have exchanged ideas, but i think what i'll do is postpost Mousers Magic Keyboard for a while, and do a different program for my other NANY 2009 app.

I've been meaning to do a multimonitor-centric screensaver thing for a while and i think i will do tht.

this is exciting! im looking forward to seeing what context menu plugins people come up with.

I upgraded the last fsubscript with new fscript.dll that support onprocesstriggerv2. onprocesstriggerv2 will be triggered on selection of items, context menu, tab completion.

Living Room / Flash Tower Defense Game of the Week: Viking Defense
« Last post by mouser on December 20, 2008, 12:43 PM »
Here's a nice and deep tower defense game with a few new twists.

I love the tower defense genre.. it's always interesting to see what mechanics work and don't work, and how different games experiment with different elements.

This one is easy to play but adds a few new things that have mixed success.  Perhaps the most interesting new aspect is the idea that certain upgrades and new towers are unlocked only by reaching certain achievements.  The achievements are listed and your progress towards them shown.

This game also makes use of something i'm not that fond of, which is manually triggered/aimable actions.  In other words, to take maximum advantage you have to be prepared to direct strikes occasionally.

Yeah i suggested to Nudone that it would be so nice to use that image for the basis of the NANY mug, since it was so damn good.
He might be willing to make some changes if people suggest, especially in the text.

Living Room / Re: How do you organise your 'My Documents' folder
« Last post by mouser on December 19, 2008, 05:12 PM »
mouser, I have a question.  In the PorgramFiles directory, do you only put programs there that do not come with an installer?  Like, you just drop the files there?  Then, anything with an exe installer goes to the default "Program Files" directory?

yes.
i mean i always create a subfolder of course for each such program, and i always create a shortcut to the program in my start menu.

but all programs with installers go into default "Program Files" and all programs without installers go into "ProgramFiles"

if a program has an installer i tend to not change the subdirectory it installs info -- only if it wants to install C:\STUPIDPROGRAM do i change it to C:\Program Files\STUPIDPROGRAM

i used to change things but i've found its not worth the risk -- there is always a risk when you change the install directory that it will confuse a future installation, etc. so i dont mess with it and let all installer programs go exactly where they want to.

anything that only really runs periodically (hard drive, cd) really don't concern me in terms of noise.
the annoying noises are all from fans (fans on case, motherboard, psu, graphics cards) that run constantly.  those are the ones you really have to be careful about what you buy.

i don't use RAID.

you only really need one superfast one, for the operating system install, in my opinion.
but you could use another for your documents -- if you are working with big music files that might be wise.

New case mentioned at electronista:

Elegantly Silent
The Sonata Elite expands Antec’s original Sonata design with even more silence and elegance. With 7 drive bays, 7 expansion slots, and 0.8mm cold rolled steel construction, the Sonata Elite has ample size and durability, while the vibration-reducing silicone grommets ensure the quietest possible operation. Side intake vent draws in air over the hard drives and into the case, while a quiet 120mm TriCool™ exhaust fan and 120mm rear slot exhaust blower form the optimum balance between silent operation and cooling power. The Sonata Elite also features convenient front mounted USB, eSATA, and HD audio ports. These cutting edge features combined with Sonata’s Quiet Computing™ reputation make this case a truly quiet legend.

price: about $130

LaunchBar Commander / Re: LaunchBar Commander tried to access eagames. com??
« Last post by mouser on December 19, 2008, 07:25 AM »
absolutely not.. none of my programs would do such a thing -- there is no phone home code in my programs, no hidden web checking of any sort. i'm totally opposed to such things.

the only thing i can think of is if LBC launched another program, which in turn tried to connect out to the website, maybe that could confuse outpost?  shouldn't, but.. maybe?

i should point out that LBC doesn't even have built in update checking code, so there is really nothing in LBC that tries to connect to the web for any reason.

going to lock this thread now since i think we have some reasonable differing opinions expressed in very calm fashion and i don't want any chance of things getting acrimonious at this delicate stage.

i promise to open it back up for debate once we know more -- and i encourage anyone to contact me by personal message with their thoughts, regardless of your viewpoint on the issue.

Wusterfields comments are right on the money.  It seems like trademark law and copyright law share some common issues in terms of "prior art" and the formality of registration.

See: http://www.uspto.gov...c/basic/register.htm

"Is registration of my mark required?
No. You can establish rights in a mark based on legitimate use of the mark. However, owning a federal trademark registration on the Principal Register provides several advantages.."

Anyway, let me say again:
I do not ascribe any malicious intent to this twitter site and new startup company.  I am not claiming they are copying our idea or that they are acting in bad faith.  I am making an attempt to contact them to see if the issue can't be resolved in a friendly fashion that results in their mascot being different enough in concept to limit the possibility of confusion between the two sites/companies.  I will report more as I learn more.
