Yes, it's understandable for antivirus programs to be skeptical of new apps, BUT the thing that is so unfair is:

1. They tend to blanket label ALL AHK written programs as dangerous, which is ridiculous and lazy.  I don't use AutoHotkey but I think it's absolutely outrageous that they do this, they are causing huge pain for coders who do.

2. They are not being truthful to users when they flag the programs.  If they popped up a message that said "This program was written in a language that we can't analyze well so we can't tell if it's dangerous" that would be one thing, but instead they inevitably pop up some obtuse message that makes the user think the antivirus program actually discovered something malicious.  IF AHK had lots of money behind it they might be able to sue these antivirus companies into not maligning their software.. but it's hard to see any incentive for the antivirus companies to shape up.  The only other leverage is for reviewers of antivirus companies to start calling them out on their bullshit.

The ultimate answer should be for these antivirus companies to STOP doing this.. it's kind of outrageous and irresponsible.

Right now when you use the quick paste menu you can right-click on a clip to get additional options for pasting and other actions, so you could always use that.. And of course there would be an option to only ever store plaintext clips.

I'm hesitant to think about having a fundraiser unless I feel we deserved one and I don't feel like we've created enough new good things lately.

Though it is our 15th anniversary this march.  Something to chew on..

« Last post by mouser on January 15, 2020, 10:32 AM »
There is a good FARR nircmd alias set for these things, which works great, but nircmd is sometimes flagged by antivirus for stupid reasons so I think I stopped bundling it.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Possible suggestion -- variables in clips
« Last post by mouser on January 15, 2020, 02:38 AM »
I like the idea of a paste with the program asking for variable to replace before pasting.. It wouldn't be very hard to add.. The real question is whether it would be smarter to write it as a built-in function or whether it would be better to have a way for CHS to be told about a standalone exe it should invoke to paste certain formatted clips, and let the 3rd party tool do the prompt for variables followed by replacement and paste..

Screenshot Captor / Re: %scrapetext% and %browserurl% fields! Do they work?
« Last post by mouser on January 15, 2020, 01:46 AM »
Quick answer is that the browserurl used to be easy to get from all browsers, but I think over the years browsers have been less willing to make this info available to outside processes for security reasons.  I wonder if we could figure out an alternate solution to this.. perhaps with a browser plugin.. Though you could of course always use a browser-screenshot-plugin for a browser that might save the url.

%scrapetext% if i remember correctly, is only for when you capture a windows object like a button or text control..

Yep, what tomos said -- CHS stores plaintext only clips..  Having said that, perhaps it's finally time for me to add support for other formats..

« Last post by mouser on January 14, 2020, 04:15 PM »
Ok so the new version is fixing it.. that's great.. There is new code in the new version to properly handle images that come in rotated (for example taking with camera rotated), but it sounds like the fix also solved this.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Saves rotated 180 degrees and in greyscale. Why?

Image files can have a rotation variable set in them telling the viewing program how to rotate the image (think taking a photo with a cell phone and the cell phone may be rotated -- that info is stored with the photo).

The thumbnail and windows explorer, may not know how to rotate the image to correct for this variable in the image (though SC at least the new version does).

So it seems like the rotation variable is being set for that image.. but I don't understand why..  Do you ever bring photos into sc to edit them? It's possible that sc is loading a photo with a rotation flag set and then is not clearing it when saving new images.. and so the flag is continuing to be set on new captures.. I should be able to write a quick fix to check that..  And I can maybe show on status bar when an image is loaded that has non-standard rotation flag set..

how strange..

and if you double click on the image in the thumbnail to make it open in an external image browser, is it rotated or right-side-up?

I'd really like to figure out what might be causing the problem -- there's no reason you shouldn't be able to save in jpg..

« Last post by mouser on January 14, 2020, 03:14 PM »
Just kidding of course. Can you give me a screenshot of your Image File Format options tab?  I'm curious if the problem might be related to the compression level or color depth setting..

And a question -- did you take the original screenshot using Screenshot Captor (from a web page for example), OR is the original image from a camera and you are just editing it in Screenshot Captor.

Also, I see you're using an older version of screenshot captor -- can you upgrade your version of Screenshot Captor, and see if the problem remains when you re-save.. If so,

That's normal.. US export law of 1929 requires all horse screenshots to be stored rotated 180 degrees and saved in grayscale.
[the exception is miniature horses and mule-horse halfbreeds, which may be stored as any angle < 90 but must be saved in 32-bit full color]

Find And Run Robot / Re: Help Needed with Read Only Alias File
« Last post by mouser on January 14, 2020, 03:05 PM »
[EDIT: Tomos posted much of what I said below before I got a chance -- however one note is that the "read-only" that FARR is talking about is just its internal decision, and has nothing to do with read-only flags that windows puts on files, so no point looking at those]

FARR treats its built-in alias files as read-only because they would get overwritten on an update.. But the myaliases.alias file should not be in the same place and so should not be treated that way.
I wonder if perhaps your "myaliases.alias" file was put by you in the same folder path as the built-in aliases?

In general, assuming a non-portable install, the built-in aliases will be in C:\Program Files (x86)\FindAndRunRobot\AliasGroups\Installed\
And your custom alias file(s) will be in: C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\DonationCoder\FindAndRunRobot\AliasGroups\MyCustom\

Check to see if they aren't where they should be.  You can exit farr and move them if not.
If that's not the problem, make sure that you aren't trying to run FARR portably (by editing the configdir.ini file) from a directory where that would be illegal (like C:\Program Files..)..  One of the ways people get into trouble is by copying a portable install to the normal program files directory..

Let me know if you get it solved.

I think perhaps one thing I could add to FARR is have it show the absolute directory where an alias file is located when it's selected, and maybe check for the cases where the myalias file is where it shouldn't be.. Maybe a hint for people to explain WHY an alias file is being treated as read-only and how to deal with that if they want to modify such an alias.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Clip Order and Duplicate Copies
« Last post by mouser on January 13, 2020, 01:08 PM »
I think I see what's happening..  Turning off the checking of duplicates, as IainB suggested, should solve your problem and do what you want, but CHS is still balking at copying the same clip multiple times in a row.. It's refusing to create a new clip that is the exact same contents of the previous clip..   That's almost always what one wants, but you've come up with a scenario where you need it.. I'll have to add an option for that..

Super-sized Newsletter for Jan 12, 2020
"Codename: Twenty Twenty"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings and welcome to another DonationCoder newsletter.  It's actually been a little over a year since the last newsletter.  In the last newsletter I reported on the results of our 2018 fundraiser, and we were celebrating the new website.  This last year has been a little quieter -- with the new website working great, and no justification for having another fundraiser.  However, I do have the results of our latest NANY event to report, lots of threads on the forum to highlight, and some new DonationCoder applications and updates to talk about.  Let's get started.

2. NANY 2020 - New Apps for the New Year

For the last 12 years on the DonationCoder site we have run a friendly event called "NANY" (New Apps for the New Year), where we invite forum visitors to help us celebrate the new year by releasing a new freeware program on the first day of the new year.  We typically get a variety of entries -- some are genuinely useful tools designed to be shared widely, and some are programming exercises for new users.  There's no winners or losers; all participants receive a free and fancy DonationCoder NANY Mug.  The 2020 entries are in and we've posted a long wrap-up describing them.

3. Mouser's Software Updates and Discussions

I've uploaded some updates to many of my large applications since the last newsletter, and released some new apps as well.

4. Threads about DonationCoder Apps

I've collected here a number of threads discussing questions, problems and feature requests on the forum for many of my applications.

5. Member Projects

We love to keep up with projects that our members are working on, and hearing what our forum members think of software they use.  If you're working on something interesting -- let us know!

6. Fun, Humor, Games, and Interesting Discoveries on the Web

Here's a collection of some interesting web discoveries, humorous videos, and games on the forum.

7. Developer's Corner

This section highlights some discussions that might be relevant for not just coders and developers, but also people interested in entrepreneurial issues.

8. Software Discussions

Just a roundup of some threads on our forum discussion specific programs, or which programs people prefer for performing specific tasks.

9. User-to-user Questions

A collection of threads where people are asking for assistance or advice, or just sharing their thoughts.  I've also thrown in some DonationCoder website related discussions into this section at the end.

You can change the ordering and the parentage.

To change the parent, click and drag a group node to the node you want to make the new parent.
To change the ORDERING of children under a parent, right-click and edit the group, and then change the "Display Order Weight"..  (clips can be ordered the same way).

I don't know why this app wasn't submitted as part of NANY, dcmember r0bertdenir0's app Pandemonium:
https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=48841

If you have tried apps like noisli or brain.fm, you know what Pandemonium is about.
I work in an open plan office & it can be hard to get into the zone when there are ad-hoc conversations going on.
Noise cancelling headphones are good for low frequency noise but not so good at voices.
What I've found works for me is non-vocal sounds.
Natural sounds like rain, birds, running water, soft classical music (I like Gymnopedie by Satie) work especially well for me.
Services like noisli give you a fixed set of options to choose from.

Pandemonium lets you create a playlist of any number of audio files (anything supported by the IrrKlang library).
You can then simultaneously play all the streams over each other, setting volume on each stream.
I've found it really helpful for focusing & hope it might be useful to others.
It's probably best used with headphones, but that's up to you.
