Finished Programs / DONE: script to prevent near-sightedness!
« on: December 01, 2005, 03:52 PM »
Thanks to mouser I found this:

14. Prevent near-sightedness!

Poor distance vision is rarely caused by genetics, says Anne Barber, O.D., an optometrist in Tacoma, Washington. "It's usually caused by near-point stress." In other words, staring at your computer screen for too long. So flex your way to 20/20 vision. Every few hours during the day, close your eyes, tense your body, take a deep breath, and, after a few seconds, release your breath and muscles at the same time. Tightening and releasing muscles such as the biceps and glutes can trick involuntary muscles -- like the eyes -- into relaxing as well.

So all we need is a bit of code what would let the user set the interval and a way it will alert the user to do exactly what's necessary! :)

This seems not only to be healthy but would also be a cool program to mention on lots of different sites, including lifehacker and stuff.

Finished Programs / DONE: use hotkey to minimize the active window
« on: December 01, 2005, 08:21 AM »
Cross-post from https://www.donation...index.php?topic=1638 :

I did try Autohotkey some time ago, but the only thing I needed at the moment was minimizing currently active window on hotkey. I didn't find how to do it with Autohotkey in an hour, so now using Hotkeycontrol XP, which in fact has this function right out-of-the-box. Although, I open for suggestions on how to do this with Autohotkey.

I'm sure skrommel is able to come up with the code for this with the blink of an eye :)

I'd also like to add the code to my main script, there are times when this might come in handy!

Carol posted a funny cartoon here:

https://www.donation...index.php?topic=1648

I was sending the URL to lots of friends to
a) make them laugh
b) spread the word about this site

...then I was told that the cartoon isn't loading, because they are not registered :(

That's why I added the cartoon again, using http://imageshack.us/

Hi,

I'd like to add a few lines to my main AHK script (that's running 24/7) that will copy this script to another partition but with the name AutoHotkey-YYYY-MM-DD.ini (so for today it would be AutoHotkey-2005-11-24.ini) once a day only - so I'd get one copy for every day the PC is running.

Any ideas? Maybe this could be somehow combined with the auto-reload on save script?

General Software Discussion / Total Recorder
« on: November 20, 2005, 12:58 PM »
http://fileforum.bet...Recorder/947823164/1

Publisher's Description:
Total Recorder records streaming audio, mic input, line-in input, and DVD & CD sounds. The recordings are saved to your hard-drive in either WAV or MP3 format. Convert different sound formats to WAV and MP3.

from another discussion:
[...] if you ever were to consider a program that costs money, I must say I have been a happy registered user of Total Recorder for 4+ years  (www.highcriteria.com)

I'm using a different program that I bought years ago but read about Total Recorder many times. I'm quite happy with the one I use but feel the need to search for one that allow me to automate recordings/use scripts to record stuff. I understand Total Recorder is good for that?

I hope vegas could go into details here and maybe show some screenshots or guide us to nice online tutorials :)

General Software Discussion / how to play mp3 files faster?
« on: November 19, 2005, 04:30 AM »
Hi,

I remember seeing a plugin for Winamp to play mp3 files faster, but can't find it anymore. Does anyone know it? It would be perfect if I could set it to play mp3 files with 110, 120, ...150% of normal speed.

I often record discussions from radio and would like to hear those faster, as I'm able to understand most discussions faster than they talk :)

http://fileforum.bet...Cleaner/1100194579/1

Publisher's Description:
CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system optimization tool that removes unused and temporary files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space.

It's a tiny and really helpful tool, I haven't tried it's "Issues" (RegCleaner) capabilities, but it's very handy to remove old TEMP files and stuff as it won't delete too much (as has happened with other programs).

Make sure to move the cookies you don't want it to delete (IMDB.com, forums, etc.) to the list of protected cookies ("Cookies to keep"):

Living Room / HELP - need price tag object
« on: November 15, 2005, 03:58 AM »
Hi,

I'm helping a friend to design a funny page that he wants to print and send to his ~120 customers. He can't afford to pay a professional for doing the layout, so I help him with that. It should show a few images of old, rusty, totally worthless cars, each with a price tag of "40000" (no currency) on it.

We tried to find something good-looking with Google, but had no luck. Who could help?

Mini-Reviews by Members / Startup Delayer
« on: November 02, 2005, 06:04 AM »
http://fileforum.bet...Delayer/1088376249/1

Publisher's Description:
Startup Delayer allows you to setup how many seconds after Windows has started to load each program.

I suggest you get the latest beta from http://www.r2.com.au...blicbeta.php?page=12 - they fixed a problem I had in a previous version and improved various things.

This great tool has been running here for quite a while without problems, really great if you like to start lots of programs but still want Windows to start faster by delaying the not-so-important ones.

EDIT:
If you experience the problem that some programs are started twice read https://www.donation...99.msg14556#msg14556

Mini-Reviews by Members / Locate 3.0 - great *FAST* HD search tool!
« on: November 01, 2005, 09:17 AM »
Check out http://fileforum.bet.../Locate/1044509669/1 (if you want to install the latest beta you need to install the latest full version from the Locate homepage (listed there too) before you install the beta)

Publisher's Description:
Locate saves names of all files in your hard drives to file database. After that you can locate files. This program works like updatedb and locate in Unix systems. Win32 based locating program also included.

Is that the perfect replacement for Windows' Win+f search? It is!  :-*

Only needing ~5 seconds (yes, that includes typing your search) to find a file? Great!!

I tested Locate waaaay back and didn't look at it again for a long time - it's unbelievable how great it works now; and it only uses 2 MB RAM! This is how Locate could look for you (the great (and free!) FastStone Image Viewer is in the background):

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/5904/dcforumlocateplusfiv3qt.png

By clicking the Presets button (or using its keyboard shortcut, which I prefer) a menu pops up, showing you the searches you already saved, and allowing you to remove and add presets. Presets are very helpful for those searches that you are using again and again. A preset could include filenames, extensions, size limits... you name it. Very helpful!

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/9038/dcpostlocatepresets0jj.png

This is the latest settings window - you can now set the first two "Locate dialog" settings to always have Locate running in the tray when you hit ESC or click the close button - then just press Windows+f to have it pop up again - very handy:

http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/2778/dcforumlocategeneralsettings5m.png

Here you see the Database settings. A Database could be one partition or just one or three directories - you decide! You could also exclude certain paths. It's very easy to create several databases with include and exclude options. Clicking on one and clicking "Edit" will get you to the details:

http://img460.imageshack.us/img460/7049/dcforumlocatedatabases8xs.png

In the Auto update settings you can choose when which database is supposed to be updated - for example, you can set one not-so-interesting database to be only updated once a day (should you really need an up to date database you can just right-click the tray icon, indexing is quite fast) and another one every hour - splitting them up saves time in this case:

http://img460.imageshack.us/img460/5128/dcforumlocateautoupdate9kl.png

What I also like about Locate is that I can set it to close to the tray when I hit ESC. I'm using AutoHotkey to start it (bring it back from tray) instead of Windows' own search when I press Win+F, and I use Shift+Win+F to run a second instance of Locate when I need it:

#Persistent
#f::
IfExist,C:\Programme\Locate
  run, C:\Programme\Locate\Locate32.exe
return

#Persistent
#+f::
IfExist,C:\Programme\Locate
  run, C:\Programme\Locate\Locate32.exe -i
return

Update: Searches like *URL.txt;*lol*.jpg work in the latest beta now!

Update: I asked "how to set Locate to 'activate' the first found file when the search is done (like in the Windows search) or maybe even already when the first file is found." - thanks to the nice coder this features has been added!

[edit by mouser: please upload pictures instead of linking to them!]

How can I place a shortcut to an URL on the desktop that will always open a NEW browser window instead of opening the page in an existing one?

Does anyone know?

Hi,

is there a (free?) tool to auto-synchronize FTP folders with folders on my HD? So that I can set it to "synchronize D:\random stuff\ with [FTP URL]/some stuff in here/" every 24 hours?

Also, which newbie-friendly (free?) FTP tools do you recommend? I haven't used FTP in years...

Mini-Reviews by Members / Weather Watcher 5.6 - now better than ever!
« on: November 01, 2005, 02:16 AM »
Publisher's Description:
Weather Watcher is your personal Windows desktop weather station. Automatically retrieve your local weather from the Internet and store it in your Windows system tray. With one click of your mouse button, the most current weather update is in your view.

It's non-bloated and just got better with version 5.6. You have lots of options (good!) and could customize it to your needs (temperatures in F or C etc., etc.).

Hi,

I have some funny avi and mpeg video clips which I want to show a friend. She has no PC (yes, those still exist! :D ) and so I need to burn them on a Video-CD or DVD.

I understand that Nero is able to create Video-CDs? But what about DVDs? Do I need a tool like InterVideo's WinDVD Creator for that or is there some free alternative?

Screenshot Captor / "Made with Screenshot Captor" object
« on: October 28, 2005, 10:07 AM »
I like the idea of having a "Made with Screenshot Captor" object or maybe even a few different in SC, the one that's there right now looks good but not perfectly on non-white backgrounds, check the corners:

Hi,

I need a simple tool to let me start up a certain .exe file in a definable number of minutes. It would be perfect if a tiny window would pop up when I start this tool where I would just have to enter the minute value (if I like a different one from the one before) and hit Enter. Then maybe there would be a countdown displayed where I can change the minute value to restart the countdown with that and maybe a stop button to stop the countdown completely.

Any ideas?

WinCron probably could do that, but ~80 bucks is too much...

Living Room / needed: unobtrusive "new mail!" sample
« on: October 23, 2005, 05:59 AM »
Hi,

I'm searching for a new sample to notify me about new emails. I don't like the Windows standard and have used a combination of a few tones and a female voice until now, but want to use something different now.

I search for something unobtrusive, but I still need to be able to hear it when I play music.

What do you use?

Screenshot Captor / suggestion: improve zoom with mousewheel
« on: October 19, 2005, 07:44 AM »
Hi,

I just wondered: what about supporting "zoom in" with Ctrl-MouseWheelUp and "zoom out" with Ctrl-MouseWheelDown? Several other apps (like the cool http://fileforum.bet...aintNET/1096481993/1) support it too.

Also, what about giving the zoom slider on the right side a different color when it's NOT = 100%?
And maybe move the %-value to the top of that 'column', so it could sit there in a bigger font next to the other %-values. This would also allow to use more space for the central edit window.
