Post New Requests Here / IDEA: fitness timer

Hi,

maybe such a tool (or a vaguely similar one) already exists, but I don't know it and couldn't find one.

My idea: a simple tool with 2 settings:
- number of intervals
- duration each in seconds

It would then just display something on the screen (in a way that's visible from a distance, so maybe by using 50% of the screen size) that alternates every [duration each in seconds], as often as wanted ([number of intervals]).

Another option could be a sound being played every [duration each in seconds] in addition to what's on the screen, so that it works with exercises where one can't face the PC too.

Would love such a tool!

PS: 30 pushups, anyone? (Not me [yet?]) 8)

General Software Discussion / split PDF files - context menu program?
« on: October 17, 2007, 08:04 AM »
Hi,

long time no type!  8)

Is there a tool that I could use like any other "Open with..." tool? I sometimes get PDF files of 2 or 3 pages and need to split them (always into single pages), which I now do in another program. Not the most handy solution... Any ideas?

Living Room / how to find out if external HD uses USB 1.x or 2.x?
« on: April 02, 2007, 03:12 PM »
Hi,

how is that possible? I have the feeling that it should *not* take almost a day to move 50 GB from one external HD to another. Both drives are what's being sold these days, not old crap.

Hi!

I know we have some users who are really experienced with backup programs. Here's your chance to offer a great solution! :D I want to most easily do this:

- backup certain files and folders from my HD to my USB HD #1
- backup the complete USB HD #1 to my USB HD #2 (which is connected less often)

I'd like it be more of a sync than of a backup operation, as only the files that are changed/ new in the source path should be updated in (and copied to) the destination path. Files that have been removed in the source path should be deleted in the destination path too.

It'd be great if I could set up all the source and destination paths *once* only and then, whenever I feel like it's time for a backup, just plug in the HD(s), start the program and hit a (few) button(s) to start the backup process.

Your optimal answer would point me to a software solution (does not have to be free) that is still in development.

Thanks!

I wonder if anyone here already uses such a service.

General Software Discussion / needed: tool to sync two HDs/folders
« on: February 13, 2007, 06:59 AM »
Hi,

I need a (free if possible) tool to sync my HD - or really just several folders, including subfolders (from C: and D:) - to my backup HD that I just connect every now and then.

Is there a smart tool that has no problem with some of the source folders being written to while running? (i.e. it should just copy what it finds in that moment and not care over more changes after that moment)

Over the years I saw a few of these programs, but since I never needed one before... your help is appreciated!

Living Room / password-protect external HD (USB)?
« on: January 20, 2007, 06:48 AM »
Hi,

as some of you noticed in https://www.donation...index.php?topic=7068, I'm currently looking for an external HD. Is there a way to password-protect the content? Like that I would need to enter a password before Windows is able to really access the drive after I reconnect it?

It doesn't have to be CIA-proof (although that's never bad ;D), I'm just considering putting a backup HD in the hands (or drawer) of a friend or neighbor (in case my flat burns down to the ground) and don't want him to read all of my files.

Hi!

You know how quickly little children can fill their eyes with tears?

My HD is not filling as quickly but now it's full. I don't want to burn what's on it and thus need an external HD. Since there seem to be 2602960123 different models available, I need your help.

What model would accompany my quiet PC (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=6318.0) perfectly? Price is important, but silence too.

I still own a HD (with just a few dozen GB) in a bad case - I suppose it's possible to use that and the new one simultaneously, both using USB?

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: DimSaver *improvement* needed!
« on: January 18, 2007, 05:07 AM »
DimSaver (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3095.0) still isn't running perfectly here, and MAYBE I finally figured out a way to fix it.

If not, this would 'just' make DimSaver a bit better :)

DimSaver has "Actions that closes DimSaver" options (maybe rename that to "Actions that close DimSaver"?):
  • Mouse Moves
  • Mouse Clicks
  • Keys

I need a new option, "Mouse is moved for more than ____ milliseconds"! That should hopefully fix my problem, *and* it would allow users to click to another window or close something without disabling the screen-saver.

I'd love it! :-*

If you can spare the time, you might also want to add an "Keyboard used for more than ____ milliseconds" option, which would be very helpful too!

Skrommel sadly seems to have lost interest in DimSaver, maybe I asked for too many features (sorry!) :-[

Anyone up to this task?

please click - thank you :)

Maybe it's only me, but I'd *really* like a text editor (free and fast if possible) that offers some kind of customizable zoom feature, like Word or Firefox for example. More like Firefox, which allows to increase/decrease with "Ctrl and +"/"Ctrl and -", would be best.

Is there something like that? Maybe even with nice little features like "ESC works like Alt+F4 key combination" like win32pad (https://www.donation...x.php?topic=1000.0)?

Do you have trouble visualizing product sizes when shopping online? If so, try this easy comparison tool
http://www.sizeasy.com/

Saw it mentioned on http://www.engadget....750-moto-q-and-bb-p/ - there you can also see some sizeasy results. Helpful!

Have you built your own Google search engine yet?

I originally replied in https://www.donation...index.php?topic=6146 and then split the topic. If you read a book that changed your life in the best meaning of the phrase, please share what you know!

Please don't just post the book name, post the Amazon link (like I did below for Radical Honesty), so that we can check its ratings and reviews easily. Thanks!

the inspiration that I've been looking for to help get out of the rut that I feel I've been in lately, and to make some major improvements in my lifestyle.  Highly recommend for anyone looking to do more positive things in and with their life.
Along those lines I also recommend you buy the book Radical Honesty. Not an easy read but well worth the time invested!

Hi,

I just accidently discovered a new (at least to me) SC feature: when you press ESC it's minimized to the tray. That's nice, but not that helpful if you are renaming a file and just want to abort the renaming - by pressing ESC.
:)

Could SC maybe detect if you are renaming files and then don't minimize? Or something else?

Living Room / wanted: free web-mail + forwarding
« on: December 11, 2006, 04:15 AM »
Hi,

I'm looking for an alternative/addition to the big players Google/Yahoo/MSN, that allows me to forward emails to one of my other accounts. The site should already be around some time and somewhat reliable.

Any candidates?

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: change monitor brightness with keyboard
« on: December 02, 2006, 02:32 PM »
'Smart' cars use less intensive interior lights in the night, why isn't there some automatic like that for monitors?

Since there isn't, I wonder if there's some easy way to change the monitor brightness with the keyboard? Maybe change some other settings too - my monitor has the user-defined 'profile', and profiles for Text (the white has a kinda yellow touch there), Internet (brighter) and Entertainment (even brighter than 'Internet').

Living Room / dictaphone needed - any suggestions?
« on: November 13, 2006, 01:20 PM »
Hi,

I'm planning on doing interviews for a project and need some kind of dictaphone for that task. I saw some for about 20 bucks at ebay, but doubt that that would be a good buy.

Do you have any experience with such hardware? What would you recommend? The interviews will be person-to-person, inside of rooms, so I don't think I need external microphones and stuff - the smaller the better. I think something that will let me record directly to mp3 files would be best.

Oh, and it shouldn't look extremely cheap if possible :)

Living Room / Productivity killer: Line Rider (Flash game)
« on: October 27, 2006, 11:39 AM »
What crude line-art flash game is getting more search hits on Google than Kim Jong Il? It's called Line Rider

Part Jackass stunt, part physics lesson, Line Rider encourages users to "draw" their own ramps, hills, and slopes with a pencil tool, then sends a virtual sledder (wearing a red scarf) along the route until he swoops, swerves and crashes. Build an elaborate enough course and you'll feel like a little kid playing in the snow again, zooming downhill, popping up in the air, wiping out on a ramp jump a la Evel Knievel.

It's fun!

Living Room / Want to save gasoline? Lose some weight.
« on: October 26, 2006, 04:10 PM »
Want to spend less at the pump? Lose some weight. That's the implication of a new study that says Americans are burning nearly 1 billion more gallons of gasoline each year than they did in 1960 because of their expanding waistlines. Simply put, more weight in the car means lower gas mileage.

Using recent gas prices of $2.20 a gallon, that translates to about $2.2 billion more spent on gas each year.

Post New Requests Here / DONE: ESC closes Windows Explorer (AHK)
« on: October 08, 2006, 07:00 AM »
Hi!

I came up with this little script to easily close Windows Explorer windows:

#Persistent
$ESC::
  Send, {ESC}
If WinActive("ahk_class ExploreWClass")
  Send !{F4}
return

It works great, it just has one problem: you can't use ESC anymore to abort renaming of files, like when you accidentally deleted important parts of the file name and can't just press enter to "OK" the change.

So I need some way to 'only send Alt+F4 (!{F4}) if ESC is pressed twice within one second'. Got any ideas for a smart solution? I bet you do!

Hi,

I'd like to disable "Restore Text Size" that is executed when I press Ctrl+0. Is this somehow possible?
