This feature is particularly interesting as neither of my other two ad blockers (AdMuncher and AdBlock+) do this.  Youtube ads have become really annoying.

Emailed Spector regarding the article and his response:

VeraCrypt changed its file format to improve security. It should have offered TrueCrypt file support--at least in read-only--but it didn't.
You can still download TrueCrypt 7.2, which I believe is read-only. Use it to move your files to a new VeraCrypt container.

So one should create a new VeraCrypt container, transfer the TC files into it then delete the TC container along with TC itself.  Think though I'll wait to do this until a newer version of VeraCrypt is posted as I have a bias against v. 1.x programs.  Rather like never buying the first model year of a new car model, which brings to mind another advantage of TC in that it was a mature program.  Sure will miss it despite its funky container setup procedure.

Indeed.  VeryCrypt wouldn't open one of my TC files.  The program just hanged (hung?).  Maybe the next version will or one can create a new container with the same files and delete the TC container along with TC itself.

I'm glad at least there is a viable alternative available that's both free and open source.  It appears to be the most versatile currently available and I tend to trust Lincoln Spector's advice.

Belated condolence for you loss.  Lost my Buckley 7-8-14.  He was a mouser, a birder and an everything "elser."  It's tough.  Adopted Wolfgang Lipschen a few weeks ago from the local humane society.  A lot of purrs and headbutts followed.

The advantage of this ad-blocking software has always been that it's global; it blocks ads other than in browsers.  I've used it for a while now so thought you guys might appreciate it too. 

Since it's now freeware, doubt updates or support will be as they were as before but what can you expect.

Have been following Lincoln Spector's advice for years and he recently posted this: Data-encryption alternatives to TrueCrypt.

Excerpt: Currently, I’m still using TrueCrypt. But I don’t know for how long. TrueCrypt, like many other public encryption applications, can be cracked with some effort and the right tools. With no updates, it might become more vulnerable over time. If a new version of TrueCrypt doesn’t rise from the ashes relatively soon, I’ll seriously consider moving over to Cryptainer LE or ME.

At this site, it's referred to as Cypherix rather than Cryptainer.

Helpful and not too long article on this topic from a credible source: The life and untimely demise of TrueCrypt.

Excerpt: My recommendation to current TrueCrypt users? Don’t panic! But also don’t deploy any new versions of TrueCrypt; simply maintain what you have. Based on the OCAP audit, TrueCrypt does not have any back doors and still provides secure encryption that can’t be easily cracked.

Article also references BitLocker (again!) and 7-Zip.  Think I'll just stick with v7.1a for now.

Just searched "Security Update for Wepos and POSready 2009" and found no complaints about loss of functionality from those who've installed the hack (except from MS) and these latest updates.  Will probably give it another week before seriously considering installing the remaining four although the third listed (for IE7) looks quite definite.

XP box's Win Update found five more today:

Debating whether to hold-off installing.  Software Removal Tool - June 2014 is the only definite one.

Aside from this issue, posting images in this forum has become rather confusing.

I am playing a bit of a dance on trusting the mags/scuttle between today this hack works, vs whatever random time MS sends a "land mined" update the net will start screaming.

Good point about landmines.  Maybe best strategy is to: 1) hold-off on further auto-updates until enough time passes without screams, and 2) backup the registry before installation.  As for the four updates mentioned in my initial post, I found no complaints so far except from MS who wants users to spend more money a newer OS.

Should add that today, the day following installation of the four updates, my net connection didn't work initially and avast! AV acted strangely even after a warm reboot.  Then did a cold boot and here I am.  Thinking that perhaps avast! needed to "analyze" how my system changed and then decided it was okay after all.

Say what you want about PC World but I followed the advice in this article, "Windows XP registry hack keeps security updates rolling for the dead operating system" and windows update found four extra updates for my WinXP SP3 box:

Installed, rebooted and everything seems fine so far.

Now that TrueCrypt is dead, I and likely many others are looking for alternative freeware disk encryption programs.  MS's own BitLocker is mentioned often but to my knowledge can only be used on certain versions of Vista, Win 7 and 8.  Also have heard of DiskCryptor but this program appears to be not the most user friendly.  Anybody?

Although I use mainly CopyToDVD, ImgBurn has been in my DVD toolbox for a while now and have always downloaded it from http://www.filehippo.com/.  You'll notice that the site includes links to older versions of the programs.

UPDATE:  Just used ImgBurn 2.5.8.0 downloaded from filehippo to burn THE_CONJURING.ISO to DVD+R and the program worked fine as before.  Chose custom installation and simply rejected malware instal but still understand thread-starter's complaint.  Shouldn't have had to deselect anything.
