Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Spring & Easter Giveaway

Adguard license claims Https filtering.  If that works on Youtube, this program might be a keeper.

Also states, "Note: The giveaway version of Adguard for Windows has no function limits. But the giveaway license key doesn't support free updates and free tech support."  Rather confusing but I interpret that as saying the giveaway version will offer neither updates nor support and after six months, it won't function at all.

Translation: This is not a giveaway but simply a six-month trialware version beyond the normal 14-day trial version always available.  Rather sneaky.  Or am I being too critical?

Topic's subject should be changed to reflect that the offer's long expired.

Thanks for the tip.

Unusual that you weren't able to opt-out of the spyware.  All of the install effort really does make this not worth the bother.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Start Menu X Pro on GOTD
« on: January 15, 2016, 10:25 AM »
Interesting and have tried it but like a lot of others have said, this would be good for mainly Win 8.X users.  Hoping Win 7 will last as long as XP did and for that matter, still has.

Giveaway: WinX DVD Copy Pro
● 1:1 Clone DVD to DVD Disc; copy DVD to ISO image, MPEG file and folder, etc.
● Support Disney's Fake, severely scratched DVDs and Sony ARccOS bad sector.
● Mount DVD ISO image and burn ISO image or video folder to DVD disc.
Only valid until Jan.20 2016

This worked like a pro on an older DVD that DVDShrink couldn't handle because of scratches.  Even has a built-in burner.  Thanks, man.

I agree that this WAS worth installing over the previous GOTD version.  Its portability is icing on the cake.  Loads a bit slow but still preferable overall to freeware AbiWord.

58
Here's v.3.9.1 Pro.  No free updates so be sure to prevent updates in settings.

59
Turns out it's one version increment up from GOTD's and with all of these giveaways, one has to adjust settings never to call home for updates unless of coarse they're included for a certain duration.  Still worth the download since this is a decent tool.

60
Uninstalled GOTD version and installed this one.  Appears to be no expiration.  Thanks for the heads-up.

Expired.  This might have been useful as software often creates right-click entries w/o permission and a file assoc. shortcut would have been handy.

Switched to Panda Free AV from avast! and haven't looked back.  Panda appears to be less of a resource hog and has performed fine.  But the thing with this deal is that it doesn't state how long it's good for.  Usually after a year, Global AV deals expire and updates require purchase.  Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?

Thanks for the alert, though.

I subscribed to the daily newsletter from Windows Deal and haven't been disappointed.  Try it.

I installed a previous give away version of GU Pro on a Win7 Pro laptop and haven't used it much but noticed immediately that it phones home at startup.  Have been digging in settings to eliminate that.  In the meantime, it's still useful as an alternative utilities tool whenever Win7 acts up which it practically never does.  Downloaded today's giveaway to update the previous version.

Aside from that, I've found the daily WindowsDeal newsletter where the 100% off GU Pro offer is listed, interesting.  Was considering 15% off deal for CCleaner Pro then searched "CCleaner coupon" and found a 25% discount offer.  The free version has been good enough so didn't bite.  Don't much care for CCleaner's new modern GUI.

Kryptel Standard Edition 7.1 is free via this link.  What's nice is there's a USB version.

67
Interesting.  Will give this a try.  Thanks.

Looks like another site to visit daily for software bargains.  Thanks for the tip.

Thing about these lifetime licenses is how long the company will be in business and the length of time the product will be updated.  Look at AdMuncher, for instance.

71
it intercepts HTTPS traffic.

This feature is particularly interesting as neither of my other two ad blockers (AdMuncher and AdBlock+) do this.  Youtube ads have become really annoying.

Emailed Spector regarding the article and his response:

VeraCrypt changed its file format to improve security. It should have offered TrueCrypt file support--at least in read-only--but it didn't.
You can still download TrueCrypt 7.2, which I believe is read-only. Use it to move your files to a new VeraCrypt container.

So one should create a new VeraCrypt container, transfer the TC files into it then delete the TC container along with TC itself.  Think though I'll wait to do this until a newer version of VeraCrypt is posted as I have a bias against v. 1.x programs.  Rather like never buying the first model year of a new car model, which brings to mind another advantage of TC in that it was a mature program.  Sure will miss it despite its funky container setup procedure.

Indeed.  VeryCrypt wouldn't open one of my TC files.  The program just hanged (hung?).  Maybe the next version will or one can create a new container with the same files and delete the TC container along with TC itself.

I'm glad at least there is a viable alternative available that's both free and open source.  It appears to be the most versatile currently available and I tend to trust Lincoln Spector's advice.
