Check out the new free software and fun stuff released as part of our NANY (New Apps for the New Year) 2018 event on January 1, 2018: here.
Since 2007 we have held an annual event that we call NANY (New Apps for the New Year), where we ask the coders who hang out on DonationCoder to create some new piece of free software and share it with the world on January 1st of the new year. NANY is really the funnest thing we do on this site, and it's one of the few times we can all play together. There are no winners or losers, it's simply a celebration of programming and creating new software and sharing it with the world.

Virtual PC 2007 released - freewareMicrosoft released Virtual PC 2007. Probably the most important change is that it supports Vista as a host and a guest OS. It also has improved support for multi-monitor systems (but the virtual machines still support only a single monitor). It's free: http://www.microsoft...rtualpc/default.mspx

In2TV: Fast, Free, Legal downloads of movies and TV episodesI decided to give AOL's In2TV service another try, now that I have a broadband connection that can fully take advantage of it.
They have quite a collection of older TV shows and some movies available, and as far as I know you don't need an AOL account to take advantage of it. (even if you do, you can get a free AIM account) All the downloads are high DVD quality... free...and legal. (DRM protected though) http://in2tv.com |

Google Releases Paper on Disk Reliability - Hard Drive Crashes are UnpredictableDespite this high correlation, we conclude that models based on SMART parameters alone are unlikely to be useful for predicting individual drive failures. Surprisingly, we found that temperature and activity levels were much less correlated with drive failures than previously reported... http://hardware.slas.../02/18/0420247.shtml |

Resolving the Micropayment ProblemThe authors discuss how encryption can be used instead of charging fees. Transaction fees for micropayments threaten the booming online and mobile economy. Changing how the e-commerce industry imposes online transaction fees can provide a quick fix to the micropayment problem—which occurs when processing fees on such widely purchased small items as iTunes and parking exceed the merchant's margins. However, that simple business approach will provide only a stopgap measure at best because it fails to address the fact that each transaction carries fixed costs. http://www.computer.....xml&xsl=article.xsl
