Newsletter for September 8th, 2007 - Codename "All Fall Down"

1. Greetings from the Editor

Hi all, it's DC member Darwin speaking to you, at the reins of the newsletter once again.  Greetings and welcome to the Back to School edition of the Donationcoder newsletter. It's a breezy, sunny day here in lotus land as we head into fall and it's impossible to move around town - bumper to bumper traffic and every pedestrian crossing is crowded with pedestrians, all hefting big book bags. Yes, the leaders of tomorrow, our future software developers, and all of our hope for the future are back to school, at least in my region. Minds to mould... This is an exciting time for me because my oldest is off to kindergarten and my youngest is back to pre-school. Happy days - quiet mornings with a cup of coffee and Donationcoder!

Log Monitor - Great Free Tool for Monitoring Files+Dirs and Acting on Changes

logmon.png
This program, an abandoned freeware utility, has been mentioned before on the forum but i don't think it quite got the attention it deserves.  It's a deceptively powerfull and useful program.

Latest version seems to have been v1.42, but it appears to have been discontinued a while ago.. If someone feels like getting in touch with the author, tell him to stop by!

Log Monitor is a program for monitoring of changes of files and directories, capable to fulfil a number of actions at reaching the given conditions. Main purpose of the program is to automate the routine operations based on files exchange and also to watch a state of processes, being based on their file activity.

Quotes organiser?

blog clipart
I am kinda of a collector of quotes -> and was wondering if anyone had any ideas that would help my organise them. I know this kinds of branches into notetaking programs and such but I would like to know which software is good for this purpose.

Preferable I would like to add tags to quotes and preferably search by tag, author, subject, and content.  Any ideas?

Request: Keyboard locale auto-switcher?

blog clipart
I don't know if Windows has built-in functionality for this, or if there's perhaps some freeware utility available that does it; if not, I expect it to be a relatively quick hackjob in autohotkey/whatever, if somebody has the time - I'm unfortunately pretty tied up myself :/

Now, for the problem description: I run an English XP with Danish local - no problems there, I can use my quirky æøåÆØÅ letters without having the OS language butchered translated. However, when coding, I prefer an English keyboard layout, because the various chars used in C++ have a better mapping that way.

I have both Danish and English locale installed, and it's as easy as ALT+SHIFT to toggle... but it's annoying that I _have_ to do this every time I start notepad++ or cmd.exe, and ALT+SHIFT can be a bit hard to hit properly sometimes.

So, my idea: automatically setting keyboard locale on application startup. Doable?

This is quite fun to watch, and if you regularly visit our site we invite you to add yourself to our "frappr" map showing where everyone comes from:

Especially if you live in a country that isn't widely represented on the map yet, you owe it to your fellow countrymen to make your presence known so they won't feel too lonely!

FileZilla 3 gets released

fz3_win_main.png
So after a really long beta testing phase, that started with the programming team desires to use the wxWidgets toolkit to attain cross platform compatibility and to rewrite the software for the FileZilla 2 codebase was a mess, the new FileZilla is out. So what's new? Well, apart from the new interface and the possibility of running it under other SOs (only Linux for the time, the OS X version is build pending), a bunch of other things. The important ones are summarized in the wiki, and also there is a link to the Development Blog, if you feel like reading through 40+ pages of posts :). The guys at Linux.com wrote a review some days ago, based on the first Release Candidate. Note that some features are missing compared with FileZilla 2, but they plan to bring them back in the next versions.
