Acrobat bug can lead to malware installs without even opening an infected file

Screenshot - 3_6_2009 , 2_58_40 AM_thumb.png
Not cool.

If you've been living in fear of opening any suspicious PDF files since we let you know about a still-unpatched bug in Adobe Acrobat that could expose your PC to a malware infection, we've got some bad news for you: it turns out that, due to how the bug is integrated into the software, it's possible for malware authors to still get into your system, even if you never actually open an infected file.

The bug affects only Windows computers running Acrobat version 7 or later. Because the program doesn't correctly read PDF files containing a certain type of compressed image, a specially-crafted PDF can at once crash Acrobat and inject its own code into the system, beginning a malware installation. Even though this bug's been public knowledge for weeks, and exploits are already out taking advantage of it, Adobe has been delaying its release of a patch to fix it, scheduled to be available on the 11th.

DC Newsletter for March 4th, 2009 - Codename "A Call to Action"

blog clipart
Greetings everyone, this is a very special edition of our regular newsletter.

Today I'm asking for your help.

I hope you'll see enough reasons to become a supporting member of our site - and decide that now is the perfect time to do so.

This month marks the 4th Anniversary of the DonationCoder.com website.  It's been my distinct pleasure and honor to meet and talk with many of you through these monthly newsletters, through email, and in thousands of posts on the forum.  I hope you've found some program or discussion on the site that has improved your life at least a little bit.  I know from the feedback that many have.

Now we need your support to keep the site running smoothly.  Just as importantly, we need your help to show the world that our idea for a software cooperative site funded by user donations is a viable one.

Your donation, and the donations of others just like you who have found our site and software useful, add up one by one, little by little.  They have made it possible for us to continue to pay for a heavy duty pair of web servers that cost us almost $6,000 a year and provide web space for dozens of freeware authors.

So..

If you've not yet donated, or can spare a little more, please take action and make a donation now.  We will put the donation to good use as we work to improve the site, update our programs, and develop new applications in the coming year.

The Daily What’s Top 7 Billy Mays Infomercial Re-Dubs : NSFW Language

Screenshot - 3_4_2009 , 7_05_49 PM_thumb.png
Has anyone else here seen these before?  It's a new kind of humour on the youtube, audio dubs of infomercials.

Here's a list of Top 7 dub-overs of infomercials starring Billy Mays, complete with video.

They are hillarious if only for the fact that they try to stick quite close to the original scripts -- they seem improvisational in spirit.  They aren't trying to change the meaning of the infomercials, they are just putting a little twist on the presentation style.  That's their brilliance.

Honestly i am in awe of the people who come up with the ideas to do these kinds of things.

Shape Collage - Free Automatic Photo Collage Maker

collage-heart.jpg
I'd like to announce a (donationware) program I wrote called Shape Collage that automatically creates photo collages in different shapes, like a heart, cat, or in the shape of a word, very quickly and easily.

This is the project website (includes a lot of examples, screenshots, link to the download, etc.): http://www.vincentch...ung.ca/shapecollage/

I like to make collages to summarize albums of photos that I have so I can post it on my blog, use as my desktop wallpaper, use for scrap booking projects, etc.  I was never satisfied with the collages created using Picasa and other programs because the photos are just randomly placed in the collage, the photos do not optimally cover the area of the collage, and many of the photos are covered up by other photos.  I used to use Photoshop to manually create the collages, but this would take forever.  So, I created a program that automatically creates photo collages and attempts to optimally place the photos in the collage using a machine learning algorithm that I developed.  I then realized that my program was not restricted to merely creating rectangular collages like every other collage making software or website, and so, Shape Collage was born.

I enjoy developing and using Shape Collage and I want others to be able to easily create their own collages.  You can save the collages in JPEG, PNG, or even Photoshop PSD format so that you can edit the collage yourself afterwards.  It's fast and free with no viruses, ads, etc. and available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

I hope you like it!
-Vincent
