An app that does something (backup, etc.) every time a usb stick is inserted?

blog clipart
Looking for something that will update files when a USB stick is inserted.  Needs to synchronize, not just transfer, as there could be multiple, bi-directional changes.  Transfer involves only two boxes at present time, but could be expanded to three, perhaps four.

Cannot use stick as primary storage, since data files may be in use when stick transferred.  Anything functional is going to be kind of a kludge, I'm afraid.

My hope is something that will run upon insert, then alert me if any of the data files are currently in use on that box.

Free ClipArt and Photos you can use in commercial projects without attribution

Screenshot - 3_27_2010 , 11_56_58 AM_thumb.png
Long time DC member April Russo (app103) has a neat blog and shares with us today some clipart and photo sites she uses:

When you are a blogger, web designer, developer, or creating a product for resale, you might need photos for your posts, templates, and other designs, but you can't just use any photo you find on the internet. That would most likely violate someone's copyright and get you into a heap of legal trouble.

So what are you supposed to do if you don't have a camera or any photography talent?

Stock photos? Sounds good, but most stock photos cost money.

Creative Commons licensed photos from Flickr? That could be good too, but that requires a link back and there may be restrictions against commercial use. Can you imagine having to put a long Flickr URL on every t-shirt and mousepad you make?  How would you go about giving proper credit on a small 125x125 ad? And if you are making web templates it might not be the best idea to trust people that use your templates to keep the credit links intact.

So where can you get a whole bunch of great photos to use, that don't require a credit link, won't cost you a dime, and allow for commercial use, too?

Fortunately for you, I have done some research into this and found quite a few sources.

CanSecWest- Iphone, Safari, ie, Firefox hacked

blog clipart
Day One hacks at CanSecWest

As promised, the iPhone did get hacked, along with the usual suspects.

It was another grim day for internet security at the annual Pwn2Own hacker contest Wednesday, with Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Mozilla's Firefox and Apple's Safari and iPhone succumbing to exploits that allowed them to be remotely commandeered.

Like dominoes falling in rapid succession, the platforms were felled in the fourth year of the contest, which has come to underscore the alarming insecurity of most internet-facing software. To qualify for the big-money prizes, the exploits had to attack previously undocumented vulnerabilities to expose sensitive system data or allow the remote execution of malicious code.

The exploits were all the more impressive because they bypassed state-of-the-art security mitigations the software makers have spent years implementing in an attempt to harden their wares.

Nice to see one of the successful hackers uses Opera for their own browsing.

Transcendence: Free EV Nova like 2d space exploration / battle / adventure game

St_Katharines_Screenshot.jpg
This looks and feels a lot like EV Nova, a 2d space game that I loved.  Seems like a great project, and I just played it for a few minutes and was very impressed.

If you are expecting the commercial grade 3d animations that you see in big budget games you will be disappointed, but if you are interested in a more minimalistic 2d sci-fi ship battle and adventurem you just might love it.

After years of work, dozens of intermediate releases, and thousands of suggestions and ideas from the loyal community, Transcendence 1.0 is finally done! To everyone who has ever played the game, and especially to those who have patiently stuck with me for release after release, I offer my most heartfelt thanks. This truly could not have happened without you.

When I released Transcendence version 0.7 back in November 2003 I was confident that I could finish a 1.0 release in a couple of years at most. Even as recently as late 2008, I thought 1.0 would appear in early 2009. While I clearly haven't learned much about predicting my own development cycle, I have learned quite a lot in creating this game. In honor of this release I'd love to share some of what I've learned in hopes that it might be of use to some of you who are engaged in your own game projects.

It also looks like their is a great deal of interesting reading to be done on the site about the one-man development team that spent 7 years on the project.  You can also read a review here: http://news.bigdownl...riday-transcendence/

Smashing Magazine: A Short Guide To Open-Source And Similar Licenses

Screenshot - 3_24_2010 , 3_59_55 PM_thumb.png
Neat and gentle article comparing some open source licenses..

Many developers and designers want to release their work into the world as open-source projects. They want others to be able to build on and share their code. The open-source community is vibrant because of this. Open-source software is available for virtually any application you could think of. Most designers use open-source software or code on a regular basis (WordPress, Drupal and many other CMS’ are open source).

But many developers and designers don’t have a clear picture of what the different open-source licenses really mean. What rights are they relinquishing when they choose an open-source license? Without knowing exactly what the licenses mean and how they’re best applied, developers can’t make informed decisions about which is best for their work.
