I think it is the wave of porn related spam of recent weeks ... the internet is drwoning in the crap  and ISPs are struggling to deal with it.

Everytime I open my email account I have about 40 emails of porn to delete manually (spam blocking seems to be getting circumvented a lot recently!)

The junk filter in Thunderbird works very well! 1 or 2 slip by every week or so, but it catches a fifty or a hundred or so...

As for the 'net' (internetwork) being slower... I haven't noticed.

I l actually laughed out loud over this one (my wife came running to make sure that I am working - ALT-TAB is my friend). Of course, there is an unfortunate double entendre contained in the above, which I am too much of a gentleman to point out...

Anyway, I'm finding that I am getting one HECK of a lot more "Internet Explorer could not load the page" type errors that require me to refresh one or more times. Even my beloved Donationcoder is not immune...

Torrent sites are getting faster, regular intarweb pages are getting slower?

I haven't really noticed a general tendency, but a few places have been very slow as of late - the flatassembler messageboard is almost unbearably slow.

I just opened up my Yahoo inbox via their web interface and was astounded at how much spam there was both in the inbox and in the junk mail folder. Not pretty (and bad for the self esteem - apparently I am not very well endowed but can be, for a price  ).

Ars Technica reported yesterday that antispam group were under DDoS attacks, today the FBI says that the botnets control 1 million computers... The truth is that I'm using a T1 connection, and half an hour ago I had problems loading mouser's avatar in the post about the FARR plugin contest. Go figure.

I don't really think the torrent sites are the main problem anyway (though some of them can generate traffic in megabytes per second, for a single torrent) - botnet that send spam and do DDoS are worse; even if their total traffic is smaller (which I doubt), the amount of and nature of the connections they make put more load on servers, and perhaps some of the smaller routers as well.

Another big factor, that have nothing to do with the darker business on the web, are those sites on shared hosts where capacity is oversold. Considering how slow the aforementioned flatassembler.net site is, and asmcommunity.net as well, I would think POWWEB (where both are hosted) has started overselling.

I've decided to put up with ZA Pro again (I stopped running it a few weeks ago) for now because I am starting to get quite alarmed by all of this... Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but better safe than sorry.
