File Extension Seeker

File Extension Seeker

This on line tool let you query a BIG list of file extensions & corresponding descriptions across various file extensions sources (mainly FILExt & FileInfo, ad the moment, in addition to my own data coming from TrID file identifier data base). I got permission from the above mentioned sites to crawl their pages to keep my data always up to date.

Complex queries can be made on the file extension, but also on the file type description. Keyword match is by whole word, but an asterisk can be used at the start or at the end of a word, to match anything before or after.
So you can very quickly see what can be a .DAA file, for example, or get the list of all filetypes that contain the word 'document' but not 'microso*'.

All the results all clickable and will jump on the corresponding page of the listed website, to gather the whole details that any site can provide.

The layout and some other details are still be worked on, but the basic search functionality is up & running, so I hope it could be useful to someone.

Also, there's an integrated and autodiscoverable Firefox search engine on the page. Just click on the Firefox search engine combo, and select "Add File Extension Seeker" to add it to your search engines list. Then it will be possible to quickly search for a file extension directly from FF search bar.

Bye!

Nice! I'm always looking up strange file extensions on my computer like .THM. Though if it was possible, do you think you could add a method to find how to open it? Maybe add a google search string with it.

Thanks!
I'm thinking about the Seeker to remain just an indexer & search engine, leaving then the details to the pages of the sites from witch the results are shown; usually they do a pretty good job. Plus, given the different kind of approach of the various indexed sites, you can find some info on one, some additional others on another one, and so on.

Bye!

Thanks!
The last thing I added is that every keyword (of at least 4 chars) in the results shown is clickable, to initiate a search on the file description for the same keywork.
So, if you for example start with searching what are files with extension "FLAC", then can click "lossless" on the results and see a listing of all the filetypes / extension related to lossless (audio).

A new update!
I added a dump of the typical first bytes / header for filetypes that come from my TrID.
So now, searching for example for the CAB extension, this is what come out:

I posted this link previously as a source of some free scripting tools. There is also a couple more freebies available there, one being File Types Editor which might be helpful in your project. What opens what type of file information.

There is also a free help file for Powershell that might interest some?

By the way, here's a thing I just happened to notice.
An interesting side effect of putting online the firsts bytes / header / magic from my TrID definitions on File Extension Seeker listing, is that Google will index that too.

So, if you Google for some kind of bytes, chances are that you'll find a results from the Seeker's pages.
For example, this one come from an hexdump of someone searching for info about some .TST file:

Google "1A 46 53 43 54"
