Which software can extract pictures out of pdf ?
« on: March 22, 2007, 12:04 PM »
There are many pdf that are just packages of JPG-ed pages. And I want to use zip instead of the pdf package format.
So , which software can extract original pictures out ? I mean not just "print" to jpg or png, but extract CCITTs to tif, extract JPEG2000 to jpx, extract jpg to the same jpg, ...

This google search yielded a few hits... Note the third one down regarding the Acrobat Reader 6+ feature that does this... My excuse for not knowing this is that I use FoxIt Reader - haven't had Adobe installed in years.

An excellent freeware program for PDF image extraction: PDF Image Extraction Wizard

The shareware ones I've seen aren't worth the money for something you can do in Acrobat already if you have it.

Be aware that images archived in PDF files are damaged after extraction...you will not notice this in any viewer except ACDSee, which will show white parts in a messy red way. Can't quite explain it. I'll post a screenshot in a few minutes. Later...Ok, using the newest version of ACDSee doesn't produce this anymore...I suppose they were aware of it and fixed it.

I`m a firm believer in the philosophy of a ruling class, especially since I rule.

pdfimages, part of XPDF (freeware, command line), may help you:

NAME
pdfimages - Portable Document Format (PDF) image extractor
       (version 3.01)

SYNOPSIS
       pdfimages [options] PDF-file image-root

DESCRIPTION
Pdfimages saves images from  a  Portable  Document  Format
(PDF)  file  as  Portable  Pixmap  (PPM),  Portable Bitmap
       (PBM), or JPEG files.

Pdfimages reads the PDF file, scans  one  or  more  pages,
PDF-file,  and  writes one PPM, PBM, or JPEG file for each
image, image-root-nnn.xxx, where nnn is the  image  number
and xxx is the image type (.ppm, .pbm, .jpg).

NB:  pdfimages  extracts  the  raw image data from the PDF
file, without performing any additional  transforms.   Any
rotation,  clipping, color inversion, etc. done by the PDF
       content stream is ignored.

If you have Adopey Reader Pro you can do it right from reader.

The Adopey site has the pro available for a trial but it's loaded with so much useless crap it's ridiculous. You really don't need a 400Mb program to write and edit simple documents...  I hate adopey stuff... arugh.

I'm with you on that one, Krazy Hawaiian. I'm not a big fan of Adobe products either - overpriced and bloated. Not that they're alone in that... Scott (another member) used to have a signature that read: "shitty software with a good license is still shitty software" and I'd like to paraphrase that by saying that bloated software with a good (and/or cheap) license is still bloatware!
