Judgement Day
« on: December 11, 2006, 09:55 AM »
... and the punishment is worse than anything God has to throw at me  :P

Christmas, as I'm sure you are all too painfully aware, involves trawling through shopping centres until 7pm for a week straight, finding the one special person in your life her gift. Because, of course, getting a brown teddy bear has catastrophic results, easily avoided if you had thought to buy the PINK one instead. Idiot. Get out of my house. I don't want to see you again. BROWN? What were you thinking. Sexist pig. Oh, sorry, digressing here...

I need some advice for a new girlfriend  :D I am normally pixel-perfect with this kind of thing, but for *some* reason, it's tough this year. She's a typical young lady from middle England.. loves pink (reoccuring theme here) but all I have got is 'just give me a hug, that's all i want for xmas'.

Like I'm going to fall for THAT sucker again!

Any ideas that spring to mind? She's 17. Feel free to ask for advice for yourself in this thread, communal christmas therapy, if you will  :D

Ty all...

Hmmm.. quite an unusual request  How about some Winnie the Pooh plush slippers? I once bought them for my wife and she was very pleasantly surprised by the fact that it wasn't some kind of cliche gift again  ;D Of course I ran into trouble next year, but that's another story!  :'( Any way, here's a link to the ones similar to what I bought... Please note that I will deny every involvement in this matter in case you decide to follow my advice and it doesn't turn out to be what you expected  :P

OK, it's been awhile since I've dated a 17-year old, but here's tried and true wisdom from an old goat to to a young buck.

What she says: I want a hug.
What she means: I want to know you are paying attention to what I find important and fulfilling and show it in a personal way without material attachments.
So get her something that reflects you have been paying attention to HER world and how you can fit into it, not distance yourself from it.
Example: Don't get her slippers if she constantly says her feet are cold and puts them on you to warm them up. She wants YOU, not some stand-in for your foot-warming capabilities. Definitely get her slippers if the cat piddled on her old favorites and she was very upset about it.

Make sure it's something that only YOU would know and should care about. Whatever you determine is the right gift, make sure her parents and friends don't have the same idea.

If she is always asking to borrow something, don't get her one for herself. Why do you think she borrows it from you?

Don't give her what she needs unless she specifically asks for it, and even then, don't make it her only gift, and worm yourself into it somehow.
Example: If she says she could really use a new coffee maker, get the machine, a couple bags of her favorite roast, a new grinder and scoop and TWO coffee mugs (hint, hint...)

Last but not least, give it with a tag attached that says "Contents: 1 Hug"

Hope this helps.

That's some sound advice there Edvard! I almost makes me want to go out and get me a 17 year old girlfriend to try that out. Any special advice for a 39 year old man looking for a 17 year old girlfriend.  :o On second thought, maybe she should be a little older.  :P

But seriously, that there is some excellent advice you got there.

Wowza chiwowza  :D Thanks so much Edvard! Sound advice!

Printed off accordingly :) Now to hide it so she doesn't happen to come across it  ;D Seriously, thanks so much. Much appreciated DC credits on their way to you as soon as I recover from Christmas expenditure.

Aw Geez, how could I have forgotten to say that...

Any special advice for a 39 year old man looking for a 17 year old girlfriend.

Ummm... my advice isn't THAT good. ;D (if only I'd taken my own advice when I was 17... or so...)

Seriously, 10 years of marriage has wised me up to quite a few things regarding the opposite sex (and has done the same for Her, I might add ;) )

Best wishes to you RedHat...

Redhat: search the forum for some of mouser's posts about... umm... toys :P

Or perhaps buy her 1984 and Brave New World and Fahrenheit... great educational stuff.
