SysTray "lost icons" recovery app ..
« on: November 05, 2006, 09:46 PM »
hi,

whilst there are a (small) number of apps out there from win98 days, that "save" the system tray (or notification area, as it's now officially called) from being over run by an increasing number of icons, i've still to find a worthy app - or basic one-off command - that simply recovers lost icons after an explorer crash.

of course, it's nice to have both in one app, e.g. PS Tray Factory, but this does far more than i'm after - and is way overpriced ..?!  :(

also, with XP now handling the auto-hide aspect of less crucial icons, it would at least just be good to have a way to "recover" icons that don't return after a crash - as they really should.

any ideas/tips or thoughts on this one guys ..?

ps no idea why i never posted this here before - d'oh!  :-[

cheers ..

There is a freeware program called Corectif Explorer that does that but only for icons of programs that are launched from the Startup folder in the Start menu.

What it does is when you activate it, is it checks the running processes for any program that is listed in your startup folder, and if they are still running, kills them and relaunches them, which puts the icons back in the tray....all in one shot.

PS tray factory, an app I recommend HIGHLY, does this. It saves all icons that run in the tray, and on explorer crash, restores them. It also helps you unclutter the systray area.

Corectif Explorer is abandonware and it was designed for Win9x. you're better off using PS Tray Factory as Josh suggested..

Actually there are features in Corectif Explorer that don't work in 9x...were added specifically for Win2k+.

But PS Tray Factory does look really nice...might ditch Corectif Explorer and TrayTools 2000 and get that.

oops, my mistake.. :-[ btw, maybe you'll also be interested in True Launch Bar as a replacement for Tray Tools 2000.

p.s. TLB has a freeware version: Free Launch Bar.

hi guys,

first of all, thanks for all your speedy replies ..!  :)

only, like i said, i'm already aware of PSTF, only was hoping someone might be able to code sth with less unnecessary bells & whistles - as it's only one small part of PSTF, surely must be an easier way to accomplish this ..?

also, being typically poverty stricken atm, PSTF is a $ too far for me, i'm afraid ..  :-[

cheers ..

These programs may or may not be of help to you:

Free:

     TraySaver by Mike Lin:  http://www.mlin.net/other.shtml
     Win-Res-Q by Ates Goral:  http://magnetiq.com/...win-res-q-10/#more-7

Non-free:

      Trayer ($12): http://www.kfsoft.co.../trayer/features.htm

Note: I'm a happy user of PS Tray Factory.

DC has a 20% members-only  discount link for PS Tray Factory, so the price is $20  (though when I click the link the price given is $16, so it's more like a 36% discount.  Not sure what's going on there).  If that's under your level of price pain, check out the "Shareware Discount Codes: Members Only" forum.

Edit: I got the incorrect $16 price by clicking on the "PS Hot Folders" link by mistake.

Yeah, I'm a happy PSTF user as well - took advantage of the dc discount and have no regrets. I was skeptical about paying for features that are already part of XP but "came around". In fact, I posted my concerns, and had them answered, here and  here .

Josh is right (below): after testing a number of similar applications, I think PS Tray Factory is best in class.

PSTray Factory adds a lot of functionality. While its primary function is not what you desire, it does perform the function you want and does it well. I say, for the price, this is the best program available. I cant praise it enough.

ok guys, thanks again  :)

knew of one or two of the alternatives mentioned, but will reinvestigate all - including the paid for option ;)

[ edit ] just had a look at the suggestions and don't think i've seen trayer before.  v interesting .. also, google threw me back to what i think was the first of such apps i used to use, namely tray manager from PC Mag.  unfortunately i think this went paid for in v2 after such a great start as freeware .. x(

cheers ..

Trayer looks like it was designed for older versions of Windows.  Has anybody tried it with XP?

SysTrayX does what U want but is not free.
