what do YOU install on a fresh Windows PC?
« on: November 04, 2006, 12:39 AM »
My old PC was my hot testing ground. I installed all KINDA of crap on that poor Compaq machine.
back in those days, i didn't defrag, i had poor PC maintenance habits, i'd had partitions from old installations and tests i did over the years. yadda yadda yadda ... ya know?!

When I bought my wife a new PC for Christmas a few years ago for college (she was then just my girlfriend), I now have her computer (whats hers is mine, right?) cause mine finally died on me.
I use it more than she does.
The shop where I got it built also included Windows XP Pro. I've since then messed around with hers MORE than I ever did with mine, cause, HEY! I got a new XP install disk, right?
Mess up bad enough, i can just reinstall. ;)

So I got a buddy of mine to show me how to make my installation smaller, using nLite.
i still don't get how to do it, but last week, he was able to cut down my windows installation to about 300KB.

ssoo ... my question for YOU DonationCoders, what is your amazing list of software that you install on a new XP machine?

<<BTW:I've made a list of what i wish to install on my next XP installation with my newly composed (is that the right word?) ... my newly composed XP disk. http://jammo.net/myEssentialsCD3.txt
i used this opensource app called TreeLine? it's on that list.>>

i am indeed proud to state that i am weening myself off of Macromedia, Adobe, and other expensive software, and switching over to OpenSource and Freeware.
I can't forget DonationWare.
In fact, most of the applications written by Mouser are located in a zip file that's close to 34.5MB.
Plus I'm tinkering more and more with autohotkey.
Never was a programmer, but it's satisfaction rate, positive results and community of users makes me want to really get into it. :)

Hum.. First of all? Find And Run Robot. (so that i can decently launch everything else i install after it).
Next... Maybe autohotkey, so that i can have gridmove and my hotkeys working.
Next... I'll need to download and browse the web to get all the stuff i need, so... opera!
Next... keepass so that i can get all the passwords for the stuff i need (like DC forum, mail, etc).
Next... winamp so that i can hear music while installing stuff.

And then... the loads of crap i have in my 4-column start menu  ;D ;D

[edit]@brotherS: thanks, that was a bb tag (typewriter). i thought it was visible in all browsers[/edit]

The best thing about it: you don't even have to install it! :D

@jgpaiva: the program names you listed look very miscroscopic in that font in my IE :)

I also vaguely remember a similar thread, like "what are the best programs you use?" - I can't find it, maybe someone could post the URL to it here?

i think so too.

after having used Treeliner to make my original list, i grabbed TiddlyWiki.
and I put them all on there.

now it will be easier than everrr to keep track of WHAT i install. when I install it, and then UNinstall it. LOL.
