Starship dimensions
« on: October 22, 2006, 03:46 AM »
Ever wondered how big the ships are in Star Trek, Star Wars, and others compared to our puny 21st century objects? Check out Jeff Russell's Starship Dimensions site:

This site is intended to allow science fiction fans to get an impression of the true scale of their favorite science fiction spacecraft by being able to compare ships across genres, as well as being able to compare them with contemporary objects with which they are probably familiar.

Thank god for this post and that website!

I've not been able to sleep a good night's sleep since 1978 because this issue has plagued my every waking moment.

is the nostromo on there - out of the first Alien film by Ridley Scott?

i've often wondered just how big the nostromo is.

Oops.. I didn't associate "halo" with the game.. lol!
I have played halo (for about 10 minutes, which means i don't know a thing about it :P). Still, I think i'm right, it doesn't have a massive destruction doomsday machine in it, right?  :tellme:

i played halo for the first level or two. my verdict: okay for a console game if you've not played 3d shoot-em ups on a pc before - but wasn't that the general opinion from pc game fans.

I enjoyed Halo fairly well on PC, but it was obvious it had suffered due to the move to console as the primary platform.

But what a damn cool page. I'm a pretty serious sci-fi geek, so this goes right to my core. ;)

Edit: Oh yes, the Nostromo and the Sulaco from Aliens are on there - on the -10x page.

ah, great, thanks javajones.

edit:

oh dear. seems i was mistaken all along. i thought the nostromo was connected to the big lump of rock they were mining. the ship that turns out to be the real nostromo is something that i thought just came out of the 'real' nostromo.

i need to find an image of what i'm talking about otherwise i bet no one will believe me.

another edit:

i've just remembered i had a pack of top trumps cards - it had the picture of the 'nostromo' that i'm talking about - i guess that must have set me off on the wrong path. i'll try and find it...

yet another edit:

here is the image.
nostromo.jpg

i thought the nostromo was the whole lump - but now i see that the nostromo is just the little bit sticking out at the front. well, that's solved that little mystery for me - that's nearly 30 years of wondering finally put to rest.

Actually . . .

Halo Plot Revealed
The Halos (there are several) contain an onboard weapon capable of killing all sentient life in the universe.  It's a failsafe in case "The Flood" contained onboard breaks out.  So, it has a little bit of a death ray. :)

As for the game, I'm not usually a FPS fan -- BUT. I found Halo's environments to be vibrant enough and plot to be interesting enough to warrant the mindless shooting stuff gameplay.  For me, the series has been something like an interactive action film -- and as much, I've quite enjoyed it.

It doesn't have the exploration of the metroid series, strategy or cutenes sof pikmin (for you Mouser :P) or the equipment upgrade based progression of zelda or castlevania. Halo is straight forward.  You run around, kill stuff, get more guns and ammo, maybe have to figure out how to open a door, repeat -- all while watching what I thought to be a really cool plot unfold.

As for console V. PC gaming -- that's an argument that will go on for as long as time.  Personally, I don't care for PC gaming as I find console configurations (and my couch!) far more comfortable. PC = tool. Console = toy. I don't like to mix my tools and toys.  I can completely see the arguments PC gamers have for their medium of choice as well.  Both sides have their merrits.  I like analog joysticks and a couch.  Works better with Jerry on my lap than the PC anyway.

;D ;D Damn, I knew i'd lose that argument, but it was way easier making you tell me that than searching the net for the answer :P

I don't think it sucked, but I don't think it is as magnificent as every other Xbox owner, apparently. I liked the coop mode, though. More games need that.
