I hereby start a thread for NANY 2025 projects.

Super! I'm definitely participating in NANY 2025.

I’ve been working on web applications lately and I’m pleasantly amazed at how much web technologies have progressed (WASM rocks!).

Perhaps it’s okay for a N.A.N.Y. release to be a web page? Is there a requirement for a release to be downloadable?

For instance, a client requested numerical OCR from the web by processing a user-selected image file with numbers, which was done very conveniently right from the webpage. (Once loaded, it even worked offline).

Native software will always have its place; nonetheless, I find the web to be very capable these days

Special mention to Emscripten: Emscripten.org/about

Web browsers are an atrocious runtime though.

On the bright side, the runtime is standardized and already installed on the device, which translates to zero configuration on the user's side. 😊

The latest person who wanted me to code for the web specifically asked for it so the app would run on mobile and desktop "as is". 📱💻

It seems that users value convenience more than raw execution speed. 😘

A runtime...

But that'll be better discussed in a separate thread. This is NANY.

I'm definitely participating in NANY 2025.

A fellow DC member requested the "ScreenAction" program to detect changes in user-defined screen areas and trigger actions like playing sounds or running commands.

A revised version of this program will be my NANY 2025 entry .

(Another year for traditional desktop software to live on! :))

This is one of my first few Chrome Extensions, it is "freemium, which means it is free, but in order to get advanced options it is $0.99 upgrade)

Relipse, I encourage you to read the FAQ and then either remove the “freemium” license or both of your NANY submissions. They grossly violate everything DonationCoder stands for.

Quote, highlighted by yours truly:

All of the software hosted on our website can be used freely for personal use without restriction to time or functionality.

(Technically, they are not “hosted” on DonationCoder. But I surely hope that they’re not welcome here either.)

Hey everyone, I noticed that there's now an entire forum section dedicated to NANY 2025, so you can start your own dedicated threads for your submissions instead of adding them all as replies to this one.

Are you saying that all entries in NANY have to be completely free? [mouser] Do you agree with this judgement?

The whole point of this site is that all our software is free for home users. I'm positive that mouser has actually written (some of) the FAQ I linked above.
You have been here long enough to be familiar with what DonationCoder is, one would think.

I believe mouser has spoken on this subject in the past. Unfortunately it was quite a few years ago and I can't remember all the details specifically and I can't find the post(s) where he explained his position. I think he said that in some instances there was room to charge money for software posted by members on this site, but perhaps with the caveat that NANY entries specifically should be made free to members of DonationCoder?

I'm really not sure on the details, but I am pretty sure mouser isn't an absolutist that all software posted here by anybody must be free/donationware. After all, we have a forum section specifically for people to announce their product/software as long as they make their affiliations clear.

In my opinion we should wait to hear from mouser to clarify his position on the subject before any decisions are made to withdraw NANY entries.

I'm positive that mouser has actually written (some of) the FAQ I linked above.

I believe the FAQ, or at least the specific Q&A you linked to, is specifically about mouser's software, and doesn't necessarily apply to software posted by other members of the site. After all, mouser's software is the only software on this site that I'm aware of where "we... require that non-donators sign up at our forum and download License Keys that are used to extend the use of the program..."

Hi all.

I apologize for being slow to respond. As most of you know I have become wrapped up in my boardgame youtube channel and creating software for a board game I've been working on for the last two years, and I haven't been so active here.

Ok so let's see..

NANY has always been a small little event, mainly just a way to encourage people to set a deadline to a project they were working on.  And we've never been to strict about it.

But the intention was always that the software created during NANY should be free for home users, and not commercial software.

I think if it were back in the day when we would do a big NANY write up and other sites would feature the software created, then I would say that it would definitely *not* be appropriate to submit an entry where there were features not available for free users.
And it not really in the spirit of NANY to be submitting commercial software.

On the other hand, if no one is featuring the software anywhere and it's really just a matter of self-motivating, then it's hard to see how it makes much of a difference...  And if the event helps motivate you to create something that's a good thing.

----

But I think the bottom line is that a feature-limited program is probably not a good official match for NANY.

By all means, share it on DonationCoder, even mention it in the NANY thread, and don't feel bad about creating commercial software.  Even make a post linking to it in the NANY section.

But not as an official NANY entry.

Don't let this discourage you from creating and sharing whatever software you want.  Anyone writing code is welcome here and welcome to share their work and get encouragement.
But if NANY is a tiny small thing we might as well keep it focused on software that is free (at least for home users).

Just my 2 cents.

I spent a lot of hard time and work trying to get my chrome plugins out, I'm not seeing how having an advanced pay feature (for < $2) is so bad, but if you want I will take it down.

The point is that it's > $0.

Mouser and Tuxman, I am highly offended by Tuxman's irreverant profile picture and it should be nowhere in sight, it is an offense to my Christian religion and has no place in society.
Please remove it.
Thank you,
Jim

And I also must add that anyone who disrespects Jesus Christ, has not only offended Christians, but God, and also the entire religion of Islam who holds him as a prophet.

It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what.

(Stephen Fry, The Guardian, 5 June 2005)

Your religion is not more important than any other religion. Be that as it may: I take note of the fact that you are spreading nothing but anger here, presumably as ‘revenge’ for the fact that I pointed out the essentials of this website to you. If, after all these years, any member of the DonationCoder team suddenly gets the idea that not only commercial software is tolerated here, but also that my established avatar picture has to make way, I would ask for my account and all posts to be deleted. Then this is no longer the DonationCoder I signed up for and enjoyed participating in.

Ok, then I am appealing to mouser on this.
Mouser can you please take note and force-change his irreverant picture of the Man Jesus Christ.
If he disrespected Him, it is worse than disrespecting my own mother or father.
He has stated that he will not change it.
He has disrespected God Himself, Jesus the Son, Christianity, Islam and any other person who holds Christ in high regard.
Thank you,
