media icons - suggestions please.
« on: September 17, 2006, 01:30 PM »
i mentioned something about icons before - well, about managing icons for file types. Iphile was the answer.

now, i realise there is one further step to complete...

if, like me, you try out different media players or image managers and let these programs associate themselves with your files, you'll find that your icons keep changing to whatever the associated program wants to use.

thankfully, Iphile can keep things in order by saving categories of icons - so, you could have a standardised/default set of icons just for your media files regardless of the program that is associated with them.

my current problem is that i'd like a really nice set of icons that i can assign to my media files (audio, video, image) and then keep them that way. i could start designing my own icons to use but i don't think it's worth reinventing the wheel on this one.

there must be lots of nice looking icons out there that clearly display what file type the icon represents at the various icon sizes.

now, i'm thinking that something that was thoughtfully colour coded as well as displaying the extension letter would be good. so, as an example something like:

.psd file would be kinda blue to match the photoshop .exe feather icon
.pdf file would be kinda red to match acrobat
.ai file would be kinda orange to match illustrator icon

being more general, things like .avi, .mov, .mpg, would have a nice video type icon with the extension stamped over the top. similar sort of thing with .mp3 and .wav or .ogg or whatever. yeah, and .jpg, etc.

so here's the question: does anyone know of any nice icon sets without me having to click through a load of dodgy websites?

thanks.

I have bad news for you, nudone.
Even though your solution is out there, this will be one of your main reasons for procastination.
There's lots of stuff to go through when you talk about icons. I have about 550mb of them. That means 4300 icons.
But i only use one selected group. The problem is getting one pack that will have all the icons you need in the same style.

One place that was mentioned here at the forum and has fantastic artwork is www.dlanham.com . Not only icons but also wallpapers. Definitelly worth looking at.
At deviantart, there's sooo much (good) stuff, that you'll have material for weeks (maybe years? :P).

I don't know of any icon sets that would be exactly what you described, but the Silk collection at FamFamFam.com is great...and published under a Creative Commons license that allows you to change them any way you wish.

There are about 1000 icons in that set and there are some other sets on the site, as well. They are in .png format, so you will have to convert them to .ico.

I was thinking that you could add the text you want to them. It is also possible that if you explained to the artist that created those collections exactly what you are thinking, that he may just make a set and put them on the site for everybody. He loves making icons and giving them away for free. He finds it very relaxing.  :D

what you might call 'spoilt for choice'...

dlanham.com is incredible. i bookmarked his site a while back but then forgot about it. since i've been getting more into illustrator i certainly appreciate what he's doing there - might have to pinch some of his style.

still not sure which icons to go for though. might just use some temporarily and then make my own.

OK, here's what I did to maximise my icon flavor choices...
Download the GANT3 icon set from Mattahan at DeviantArt: http://www.deviantar.../deviation/15364715/
Inside is a little command-line utility called "png2ico" that was written by Andreas Verhoeven (yes, THAT Andreas Verhoeven). This is NOT the png2ico by Matthias Brenkmann, it us much more advanced and can batch create icons from a directory of pngs with multiple sizes and bit depths. The one by Matthias can only do one at a time in 256 colors max. Using Andreas' png2ico you can use all the Linux png icons available at places like KDE-Look, Gnome-Look, and a million other places.

Yes, sri, I agree with the Tango icons. That's what I use on my desktop as well. I sure love svg icons.  :-*

So, nudone (congrats on your 2.500 posts!), what did you do about media icons?  :tellme:

---

I have some nice icons for image files, but because of Zentient I never see them, and can't even show them!

These are my Mp3 icons - but from where did I get them?:  :-\

- I tried some other terms for searching, and finally got what I wanted: MP3ext

One problem is, that  the author already five years ago announced that he wouldn't be spending more time on this program of his, MP3ext, meaning that it hasn't been updated for Vista. Nevertheless it works okay with my Vista.

Another problem is a little worse: The various third party MP3 encoders that I have used are not fully being recognized by MP3ext, meaning that a number of, say, 256 kbps files, are showned as "Ext", which basically means MP3, but something may be wrong, and the sample frequency is unknown. However, I assume this also is due to the encoders.

In general, I can only recommend this program if you install this one first, and then install a newer / better MP3 "tool-tip" program like MediaInfo or what you have.

I'm partial to the Black Pearl set by 24charlie up on Deviant Art

http://24charlie.dev...Pearl-Files-78798192

Note: this sample page shows them at 50% of the original size, and doesn't really do them justice.

There's also the motherlode interfaceLIFT website, which has tons of free icon sets, wallpapers, themes, etc. Great site if you feel like browsing. Be forewarned - this site is a time-eater par excellance.

Windows icon sets can be found here: http://interfacelift.../index.php?sort=date

- nice set, 40hz

I should have told that MP3ext allows you to replace the program's default MP3 icons (shown in my previous two posts) with a collection of your own choice or making. This way you can combine a collection, like the fine one 40hz is showing, with icons for each audio sample rate.

So, nudone (congrats on your 2.500 posts!), what did you do about media icons?

I gave up on the idea of using custom designed icons. i don't need to change many of the default icons so i just customise a few that annoy me.

part of the solution, for me, was that Adobe decided to colour coordinate their icons (exactly like i'd requested in the original post). and, as i use KMPlayer, my media icons have the extension stamped over them.

Take a look at Icon Packager by Stardock, and the available associated icon sets at Wincustomize.com. You can change out icons almost at will.

(The Stardock link for Icon Packager seems to be down currently).
