N.A.N.Y 2021: Incipitor

Start Menu confusion:
because I initially have to run incipitor as admin, it automatically chose the start menu for the admin account, and not the one for the current user account. So I uninstalled that context menu entry, and did a search for the start menu location.

In the user account (Windows 10 x64) there seem to be two start menus:

C:\Users\*me*\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
&
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

I see you've chosen the user account above, but see here that there's a lot more shortcuts in the ProgramData folder...
Can anyone help my confusion ? :-)

The only thing you need to run incipitor as admin for is to adjust the context menu settings.  That's Windows 10 being overprotective. 

There are two start menu folders - one for your own user account and another for "all users".  Incipitor figures on the user's own.  Incipitor doesn't merge them together like Windows does. 

I, myself love to use Incipitor - I set it to my own user's start menu folder.

Also, there is "Programs" - Incipitor ignores this folder because the system uses it.  I think I even programmed Incipitor not to let you accidentally rename it, too.  That "Programs" folder is where all the other software will install it's shortcuts; we don't want to mess with that one.

Best thing to do is use your own user start menu folder and create some folders there and let Incipitor add stuff to those.  You'll be working with the c:\users\*me*\appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows\start menu   folder.  That should be the default in Incipitor's settings.

About two weeks ago I formatted my PC with the intent to move to Linux since Windows 10 has reached EOL and I'm not "upgrading" to Windows 11 (they say my PC can't handle it anyway, since it doesn't have TPM). Unfortunately even though they worked fine in my short tests, the new fancy Linux distros I wanted to use (Bazzite, CachyOS) are all optimized for modern hardware, and my ~15 year old PC doesn't cut it for them for much longer either (they'll be totally dropping support for my GPU soon™). So I eventually settled on Mint since I've used it off an on throughout the years in VMs and on old laptops, etc., and it has come to feel like "old reliable" to me. But on the same day I installed Mint I left my PC for an hour or so and when I came back to it, it was completely locked up. I didn't want to have to deal with frequent/random lock ups or troubleshooting how to solve them, and I needed to get my PC up and running something stable again after a few days of formatting and reinstalling a new OS/distro every day, so I decided that for what remains of the lifetime of this hardware I'll stick with what I know works with it. So I installed Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC which will get security updates until 2032 or something along those lines. By the time it reaches EOL I'll probably have purchased a more modern computer and be able to switch fully to Linux. Maybe. If prices ever come down. 😭

But anyway. I've found this tool so useful over the years. I couldn't remember what it was called but I've been missing it pretty much every day since the reinstall. I finally couldn't take it anymore and had to come back and find it so I can get back to having these sweet and easy Start Menu shortcuts for all my "portable" or non-installed programs I use all the time. I got lucky that it was search result number nine when I searched the site for "add to start menu" (and hopefully this post will help bump the result up higher).

Thank you so much for this utility, BGM! I've used a lot of apps from DonationCoder over the years, but this one easily ranks in the top 5 of "my most frequently/consistently used DC app" these past few years.
