The Great Software List Site Gets a Big Update
« on: August 21, 2006, 02:44 PM »
From zaine ridling (one of our favorite members!) who runs the Great Software List:

...
But after sinking time into almost 150 apps over the past five months, the Great Software List is now updated with some kickass apps! I added a new Usenet, P2P/File Sharing Tools section, found/updated 40 fantastic new programs, and managed to ditch 65 old ones for various reasons — unaddressed security issues, lack of development, overpriced in latest version, somehow it got shitty, and so on. I’m excited and completely exhausted.

Thanks guys! I went on a caffeine and chocolate bender for about five days to get it updated. I'd been working with tons of programs throughout the summer and finally pulled it together. Next up, a smaller, prettier front page to the site that categorizes all the apps on one page for a quick glance of what is where. I haven't worked out the exact design yet, but it will look good and be much easier to see what programs I have listed without having to surf through eight separate pages or one long alphabetized list. (You'll still be able to do both, but KenR has given me some good ideas for the rest of this year.)

I'm thinking of dropping the RSS feed since I have to manually update that, and man, that's a time sink.

I'm not sure which was better - the delight in discovering that Zaine's excellent list had received a major update or the surprise to click on a thread on a software website and spot a pic of one of NZ's favourite sons Chris Cairns!  ;D

I noticed you listed 602 PC Suite as being freeware/opensource/donationware (F). I assume that you meant it was possible to get it for free, if you wanted to.

This is no longer true. I recieved this in an email from them back in March:

602PC SUITE 4.2 was recently released on February 15, 2006

Effective immediately, freeware distribution of 602PC SUITE has ended. This software will continue to be available as a fully supported commercial product.

NOTE: On March 31, 2006, the registration portal for 602PC SUITE 4.x FREE will be shut down and you will not be allowed to reinstall your software unless you upgrade to the latest 4.2 version.

You can't use the older free versions any more if you have to reinstall it for any reason. They are forcing an upgrade & pay.

For someone that rarely has a need for word processing or spreadsheet tools, this was a great program. It's a shame that there is no longer a free version of it. It was light, fast, ran well on old computers, 9x compatible....everything I needed it to be for those rare occasions I would need something like this.  (rare = 2 or 3 times a year)

Thanks for the tip on Squeez archiver, Black Mamba! Also to App103. I inadvertantly added a freeware tag to it. I've paid for several 602 licenses, so I know that's not true, but I didn't catch it. Thanks for looking after me.

Received some good feedback already on things to add to the "front page" such as links to download sites and other things.

Sorry kyrathaba, I retired that site and domain back in 2008. I had said all I wanted to say about software at the time. And by then I was deep into Linux, where the distros and various window environments provide a pool of ready made software upon installation. Happy with what I found, and combined with various online apps, I gave it up. I have a blog (http://www.thegsblog.com/) but haven't written anything there for almost a year.
