Anyone who currently has a "site" hosted on dcmembers.com, please feel to message me and I can create a wp section for you on the beta dcmembers.org site to experiment with.

I am also looking for 1 dedicated volunteer to help me move over all of skrommel's software to this new site database.  It's a fairly simple process, but it will involve creating a new entry using an online form for each of the 100 or so skrommel's apps that can be found currently on this page:
https://www.donation...m/Software/Skrommel/. You don't need any special skills, just some patience and dedication -- it's going to take some time.

Cancel that request, it was just easier for me to do it -- Skrommel's releases are now up on the beta dcmembers site.

Beta version of dcmembers up for people to visit, using same access credentials:
http://www.dcmembers.org

Note that I will be working on this live for a while so don't be surprised to see things changing.

It is not taking my dc login user+pass !
How to get in ?

And any other long-time dc coder who needs a website space and doesn't have a suitable alternative.

Also: As part of the new DC, I wonder if it's not time to revive our old idea of having some regular columnists who write weekly or twice weekly blogs on some area of the software/technology scene.  Anyone feel like they might be interested in such a thing?

This is a very good idea. I have noted that some members are now posting very long messages and they can write them as blogs in DC. Also members who have retired (lucky guys) from day to day coding can put some tips and memories for us to have a smile in this day to day hectic schedules. My two cents.

For what it's worth, the new member server should be orders of magnitude faster and better than the current dcmembers server.

An additional note: Dc member sites can be set up to have their own custom domain names.  So if you want to register your own domain like dcbleepbloop.com we can easily map that onto your dcmember site.

Thanks, ewemoa.  Users can of course customize the site and theme, I'm just trying to go for a default really clean minimalistic, coder vibe, with all of the necessities.

Well, I've been playing with the new WP (WordPress) site for a couple of hours now (been too busy the past weeks...), and one thing that jumps out is that creating a Page in WP is a bit tedious when using tables. The table plugin ('snippet inserter' ? ) used is quite simple, creating larger tables means you're still handcrafting a lot of html. Most likely a better plugin will be available?

An additional note: Dc member sites can be set up to have their own custom domain names.
Current DCMembers server provides the subdomain url [userhandle].dcmembers.com, but the current setup (only) has dcmembers.com/[userhandle] Can that be configured in some way? Or will it 'cost' an extra domain name? I don't mind both, but having the subdomain configuration would be nice, keeping url's (and typing-memory) the same :-[

For the rest of it, well, it's 'different' from what I'm used to (Confluence, WebsiteBaker, Mediawiki, Sharepoint), but as said before, I'll get used to it.

Hi Ath. I appreciate your willingness to slog through something new.  Change is always painful.

But I do believe this is going to be a much better and long-term maintainable, and secure, solution for all dc member pages.

creating a Page in WP is a bit tedious when using tables.
I'm happy to add another table plugin -- sounds like a good idea.  I'm sure we can find a good one.
If anyone has a wordpress table plugin to recommend let me know! Free is better but I'm open to purchasing one-time pay plugins.  Security is the #1 thing I look for, though for a table plugin that shouldn't be an issue.

Current DCMembers server provides the subdomain url [userhandle].dcmembers.com, but the current setup (only) has dcmembers.com/[userhandle] Can that be configured in some way? Or will it 'cost' an extra domain name? I don't mind both, but having the subdomain configuration would be nice, keeping url's (and typing-memory) the same

I think we should be able to handle the subdomain case again, but i have to look into it.. I know that we can handle the even better scenario of using your own domain name.  The latter seems to me a better long term solution since you will have ownership of it and could point it at a different server if for some reason in the future you wanted to move.  The only downside of this is it would cost you $12/year to purchase a domain name.

Free table plugin that is highly regarded:
https://wordpress.or.../plugins/tablepress/

Does that look like it might suit your needs?

YW, when time permits, it's fun to try something new ;D

this is going to be a much better and long-term maintainable, and secure, solution for all dc member pages.
I fully support the decision to switch to something better, for all the reasons mentioned  It is indeed the transmigration process that can be tough, especially if no mechanical conversion is available/possible.

I'll think about that private domain, I already have a domain, but it's not related to software development, and I'm not sure I need another one. :-[

I saw that too when searching how to create a table in WP (wp is new to me...), and it looks very usable. Assuming it is 'backward compatible' with current tables on pages, it should be easy to adopt this ;)

It's not -- it looks like none of the table plugins are.

Basically with this plugin, and with the other ones I saw, you create a custom table object in a different area of your dashboard, and maintain all tables there.  And then you simply insert tables on pages or in posts by linking to them with shortcode like [table #4].

I have migrated the wp network to our new official dc member server(!)

The new dc member server is online and the new member pages are ready to be created by those with (or who want) dcmember pages.
Message me for htaccess login credentials.

Website:
http://www.dcmembers.org
http://www.dcmembers.com

This is the real site -- just protected by htaccess until members have a bit of time to recreate their content on the new site.

Note, you can access dcmembers via https -- just one of the improvements due to us moving to the new server and system.

And the old pages are gone where? (I never keep stuff in a cms locally backed up as I have no other location to restore it anyway :-[) Will/can they be temporarily made available on the dcmembers.org domain?

Old pages are all still preserves, backed up AND available online at their normal urls.
The only reason some are are not loading now is i don't have a good master list of the subdomains, so if you tell me your subdomain i'll make sure it is still available.

Ath, I just added dns entry for your, so your website is back online, unchanged and at same url as always http://ath.dcmembers.com
So the thing to do now is for you to recreate your site content on the new site.

If anyone has a members site they can't reach let me know your url and i'll make sure it's still available, so you can more easily recreate the content on the new site.  (if you dont have an account on the new site let me know).

Ah, pfew, thanks. It was off-line since yesterday, and I expected you to be 'moving house' on the server, so I just kept quiet.
I'll move my pages over asap.

ps: did you install that table-plugin as discussed earlier?
