I just type .exe or .doc or whatever.
You probably know that search is limited in Options, you can add folders IIRC (havent changed my settings in a long time).

Also,you could do worse than use Everything.

The search is still slow. An indexing feature will be great.

I believe it's a possiblity. But currently, for real searching that needs to be fast, Everything is probably the best solution.
There is a plugin which integrates it with FARR if you wanted that, not sure how well it works -

and if you have UAC problems:

just to add what others have said earlier.. for my Win7 64-bit, i used this guide to launch Farr and Everything (version 1.2.1.451a) in admin mode without UAC prompt and TinyEv just works!

Note also that FARR is not unicode aware (but Everything is).
