Good bye Firefox
« on: October 29, 2017, 09:05 AM »
Once upon a time...

There was a browser far superior to others.
Unequalled in tweakability (extensions, GUI etc.).
With Firefox 57, all the legacy extensions have "gracefully" been kicked out the door (or will be crippled in their new version).
Even basic options such as ctrl+shift+b to show/hide bookmarks toolbar have disappeared.

If it took more than 10 years to get a fast loading Firefox with increased webpage rendering,
how long will it take to get back some decent extensions to give back its initial splendor?

It was nice to have you as my default browser for over 13 years and more!

Thank you Mozilla for this great now defunct browser.

Some people go for an ESR version or go to Waterfox or even Palemoon.

For some reason, Waterfox is giving me a bunch of problems and won't sync with Mozilla.
Palemoon? Too many issues there too (worse than Waterfox imo).

I have tried Waterfox several times. A couple of years ago I was very pleased with it, but this year I have always removed it again quite soon. At the moment I am running Firefox ESR 52.4.0 (64-bit), but it is not perfect; there are some problems with ajax or flash or whatever it is. But I am clinning to it because of the addons. I have no idea what's going on inside Mozilla's head, but it's not making sense to me.

I recently switched to Vivaldi (Chrome-based) as my primary browser and I really like it.

But that doesn't really help you if you're looking for something you can keep your Firefox extensions with. :(

@Curt,
Have never worked with an ESR before, so it's good to hear about your experience.

@Deozaan,
Do like Vivaldi too and it sounds promising but too soon to become default.

As of late, since extensions are plenty, Slimjet has become my default.

Will miss "find as you type" feature in Firefox with "enter" to open the link found in page.

I am running Firefox ESR 52.4.0 (64-bit), but it is not perfect (...) I am clinging to it because of the addons.

important detail: one addon that makes it possible to hang on to Firefox (ESR) is "Open with.../Open link with...", button ~ right-click menu. Homepages: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/open-with/ + https://github.com/darktrojan/openwith. It is a very fast way to open a link in any other browser or editor.

You're late to the game.

I admit that Firefox 57 is fast now, but the other advantages when compared to Vivaldi are virtually non-existant.
Have you tried Pale Moon?

Pale moon?
Too many issues.
(sync issue is one, having to grant permissions to so many websites is another, limited selection of extensions/themes...).
Are you able to sync extensions, bookmarks, passwords easily with their database?
I'll give it another shot, but last time(s) i've tried it, it just wasn't ready for prime time.

@Tuxman - you may have just convinced me to stay with Palemoon.

Found ways to install many of the extensions/themes that i've come to like over the years.
FEBE for whatever reason, could not restore any data from previous times used with Firefox.

FYI, did come across this tip (Palemoon forum) to get dark theme to work with new Youtube options:
"I just changed (in about:config) "general.useragent.override.youtube.com" to use "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:45.9) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.9 (Pale Moon)" and the dark theme is available."

(could not find a Dark Theme addon to do this).

Guess it's been quite some time since i last took Palemoon for a ride.

I use PaleMoon as my defualt browser.
The one thing it's not good at (nor was Firefox) is that is eats lots of CPU when watching video (e.g. youtube, whatever). And even more when full screen.
Internet Explorer can do this properly: I even looked at the possibility of changing to IE but missed too much (couldnt find much in terms of add-ons).

FWIW the latest Firefox (well, a recent update -- sry cant remember which) improved cpu usage when watching video. But then we're back with the extensions problem...

EDIT// I dont have a graphic card on either machine here -- maybe the experience is better with one.

@tomos - have you tried Slimbrowser (built on IE)?

Still happy with Palemoon (forum is always a huge plus too!).

Just putting in a warm word for Waterfox.

With its update to 55.2.2 (Oct '17), it now has its own separate location for profile folders.

Concerned about the impending add-on change in FF 57, I've just now moved over to WF. If you copy and paste your profiles from FF location to WF location, and then make sure that the profiles.ini in WF has the same contents as the FF profiles.ini, you'll be reproducing, in WF, all your settings, add-ons, bookmarks. It would be worth checking that all the add-ons survive the transfer: I think I had to (re-)enable one or two. All in all, though, an easy process.

So much so that I uninstalled FF stable and ESR from my computer.

@orbis - that's interesting.
A bit of work, but i'm sure i can do that.

In the meantime...
Can you explain why Waterfox Portable App will not sync with Mozilla?
Or why it won't in Linux as well?
Is the later a conflict with basic Firefox profile already installed?

Sorry for the rush of questions, but Waterfox support at Reddit is zilch.
I know Alex is probably busy with a zillion things, but... at least a nudge to say, "hey, i'm too busy to answer right now" would be more than welcome.

@dantheman, 15 minutes, tops. As for the sync issue, not really something I can help with: I don't sync with Mozilla. Perhaps there are others here who can...?

Exactly.

If there is no Firefox sync, then why isn't this feature taken out?

Bug?

Maybe the self-hosted variant works. Other than that, according to online reports, this happens for some people, but shouldn't...

Why certain authors destroy their creature? What dark plan there is behind such behavior?
