In a PCWorld article, VPNs were mentioned as one of three privacy tools one should consider to combat the recent Internet privacy rollback, so this service might be worth considering. Maybe OpenDNS isn't enough.

However, the article states, "Your next step is to subscribe to a paid virtual private network service—not a free one that collects your data and sells it to third parties for analytics, or uses ads to support its free service, because that would negate the entire point of all this."

1) Don't be fooled into thinking VPN will secure your privacy on the internet, it's not what it was designed for.

I just got an email from Windscribe saying you can now upgrade to Pro for "free" by letting your CPU mine cryptocurrency for them on their website. They don't say that's what they're doing, but it's pretty obvious from the context:

Basically, the process involves you opening a special web-page on our website, which will use your CPU to solve complex math puzzles. Don't worry if you're bad at math, you don't have to do anything as your CPU is exceptionally good at that kind of stuff. Each solution gives credit to your account. And the email links to a URL which contains the word "miner" in it.

But I'm kind of curious which cryptocurrency they're mining, since CPU mining is basically a fool's errand on the most popular cryptocurrencies, due to GPU or ASIC mining rigs.

That's definitely going to be worthless for something like Bitcoin mining.

Sounds like yet another Monero miner. What's the sudden craze with that?

This is going to be a bit off topic for the WindScribe thread, so I apologize for that.

Since it seems everything is attempting to mine Monero using CPU, I looked into it a bit and downloaded a simple Monero CPU miner for Windows. I'm getting about 33 h/s per thread. Running 4 threads since I've got a quad core CPU gives me about 132h/s. According to this Monero Mining Calculator, the mining reward is about 6.5 XMR per block, and it will take me about 7.09 years to successfully mine a block, which comes to about 0.91 XMR (~$85.20 at current prices) per year. But it will probably cost that much (or more) to pay for the electricity to run my CPU 24/7 mining.

While I suppose while it isn't profitable to CPU mine for yourself, if you had what is essentially a botnet of CPUs mining for you and you don't have to pay the electricity costs, I can see how it could make you a decent amount of change. Probably a lot more than ad banners.
