AOL 1.0 Disk sells for $9K on ebay
« on: July 14, 2006, 10:45 AM »
http://www.glossynew...aol/article-1302.php

With the passing of time, both the dawn and the golden age of the internet are both long since things of the past. Much like the expiration of early automobiles, collectors have found outrageous value in clinging to the past, and AOL startup discs are no exception. This week, Todd Farmer of West Chester, PA, sold his mint-condition AOL 1.0 startup disc for over $9,000 in an online auction.

Maybe I should sell my Windows 1.0 5.25 inch diskette set? You think?

Yes, but this is an authentic disk, with label and everything.

kinda interesting, how limited availability and age (tho the term age is to be used in a relative manner in this context) represent value.
even enough value to have people want it, just so they can have it, without the object being of actual use to them in any kind or fashion.
guess that's what you call "status symbols".

i'm not saying i'm immune to this; i'm far from that. tho... i'm glad i'm not into AOL cds
it's just... veeery interesting.

what makes it even stranger is, that it seems to work only for a certain kind of object.
but then again.. there's always a idiot to be found who collects object X

This has to be on a floppy...and it has to be for Mac.

The first version of AOL for PC was AOL 1.3 for DOS. Before that it was only available for Mac (yes, that's why AOL is so easy to use...it was made with Mac users in mind  ;D)

AOL didn't start producing CD's till v2.5, I think. (I recently threw away one of those :P)

There are so many varieties of AOL CD's that I can understand how someone can get caught up in collecting them like baseball cards....not that I would. I only keep one disk of every version since 4.0, in case I am required to install it on someone's PC...a total of 8 disks.

I know a person that collects AOL cd's for an odd purpose...he's building a table from them, gluing them all together. His point is that they can be useful for something. If he ever finishes the table I'll be sure to take pics and share them.  :D
