CHS Error Boxes and I do not know how to fix
« on: January 06, 2017, 03:15 PM »
Hello,
for MONTHS now I have had problems with CHS.
I am using the latest non-portable version and have tried solutions suggested by the threads at https://www.donation....msg404031#msg404031
                               AND
https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=11219.0.

I have had these problems with CHS for a long time, but have been able to resolve in times past, but now seem unable to. It keeps coming back, however now, I cannot even seem to get anything to work. I have uninstalled and installed so many times after deleting the folders suggested.
Please let me know if there is ANYTHING I can do.

Here are samples of the latest errors I am getting.

Thanks, so very much.

Amiably,
Scott Alan Blanchard

This really sounds like the error that is caused by antivirus blocking CHS from accessing it's database files.

If adding the CHS folder under MyDocuments to your antivirus exceptions doesn't solve it, try going to Tweaks tab and changing the Temporary DB file location.

Let me know if this solved it.. I might try changing the default for this option if it does.

Hello  Mouser,
at this point, I simply CANNOT do anything with the program!! If I try to do so, I get yet MORE error boxes pop up!!
As for setting a rule in my AV program, I am not sure how to do so. I use Vipre, and I have set it to be allowed, but it is still have a problem, it seems, if that is the culprit.
When I reboot my computer, I  literally have more than a dozen error boxes on my screen!! I have to click OK to close them, and all seems fine, but I cannot use the program.
HELP is all I  can say.
Thanks, a LOT.
Scott

Can you try this:

Download the PORTABLE version of CHS, and unzip it into a new directory someplace you have write access, like a subdirectory of your MyDocuments folder or the desktop.

See if that version runs ok.  That will give us some clue as to the nature of the problem.

I forgot to ask if you had migrated your chs data or files from another computer to your current one?

Well it's not that it's not good -- you can absolutely migrate your old data file and settings to a new machine.
It's just that depending on how it's done you could end up in a situation where CHS is trying to save files where it shouldn't.

So, the things to check for are the configdir.ini file in the CHS program files directory -- that file might be telling CHS to try to save the data files in the program files directory, which you don't want it to do.

Can you get into the options of CHS? If so make sure you are using the latest version of CHS and see what it says at the top of the Statistics tab regarding where your database and temp file are stored.

Another thing you might try is this: exit chs, then go to the CHS program files directory and delete any your configdir.ini, or configdir_default.in (i.e. C:\Program Files (x86)\Clipboard Help+Spell\ConfigDir.ini)
(BETTER YET WOULD BE TO RENAME IT OR MOVE IT SO WE CAN LOOK AT IT LATER IF IT SOLVES THE PROBLEM)

If that still doesn't solve it, and you don't care about your existing database, go to your MyDocuments/DonationCoder directory and delete your C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\DonationCoder\Clipboard Help+Spell folder.

What I have done, AGAIN, is DELETE EVERYTHING after uninstalling CHS.
All seems okay so far.
I will keep you updated.
Thanks for the ideas, Mouser. I do so appreciate it and YOU.
Thanks, again,
Scott

This seems to have taken care of the problem, so far, Mouser.
I have done this before, but this time it seems to have taken care of it.
I deleted EVERYTHING related to CHS. I delted my files/folders in My Documents. I uninstalled the program and I deleted ALL files/folders in the program files\X86 director, as well.
I'll let you know if the problem seems to come back.
Thanks, so much.
