Sharpen image feature in SSC
« on: June 14, 2016, 01:11 AM »
I am in SSC in the sharpen feature of the program and have opened a JPEG file from my computer.
I use the slider button to set the sharpen value and it shows the modified result image beside the original image.
Problem is when say OK the image does not save the result image in the SSC viewer window so I can't save a sharpened image.
How I do I use SSC to get a sharp result from a jpeg file.

In the normal capture mode after taking a grab Selected Region Shot it works but on a standard Jpeg file i cannot get it to work

Screenshots should be made using the png fileformat (loss-less), not jpg (lossy). You won't have to sharpen those png files, as they are as sharp as they can be.

I converted the jpg to png 2.85mb when to 22Mb file.
Opened the png file in SSC went through the same sharpen process and the same problem ocured the output image does not save the sharpened result.
Don't know what to do now??

:) didnt even know SSC did sharpening:
but I found it, and it does work fine here though.

Are any other changes you make in SSC saved to the file?

There seems to be no changes made at all
Is there a setting in SSC that needs to be made for it to recognize an alien file not made by SSC.

As I said it works fine if you take an image using capture in SSC but not an image from external source.

this doesn't sound right.  i wonder -- how are you getting the file into SC? Maybe you are making a COPY of it in SC and then checking the original and not seeing the changes?

Opening the file from within SSC using Open file (and switch to file directory) located in the file menu and then going to sharpen feature in enhance and adjust colors, contrast etc button.
The preview window comes up and select sharpen then adjust the slider and click OK.
This should then give the new image in the view window. From there save to my computer.

But doesn't work like when you actual take a capture from with in SSC.
Am I not getting the file the correct way??

@K Bohne,
first,
my save settings may be different,
second,
I'm unclear what you mean by 'save to my computer'

My settings are 'autosave changes'

below is what I tried and it worked (with those settings)

  • opened Sample Pictures folder (C:\Users\Public\Pictures\Sample Pictures) in filemanager first and created a copy of one of the jpg images.
  • opened that copy in SSC
  • applied sharpening
  • compared with other version, sharpening was saved

Thank you Tom
Set settings to auto save
Seems Like that worked even using  a jpg file type
I also noticed the lock and unlock preview button at the bottom plays a part in the same outcome. Not really sure what this button is supposed to do.
I also didn't realize that SSC links directly to computer files when opening the file system. Changes made in SSC change the file on the computer as well.

All good now and Thank you

It should be said, that SSC is rarely the right tool for doing this kind of image manipulation and conversion.  Those features are there so you don't have to use a 3rd party tool for quick and dirty operations.

But there are some superior and excellent free image viewer/manipulation programs that are better suited when you want to manipulate non-screenshot files, like:

Thank you
I have loaded Irfanview and will trial over the next few weeks.
Is either program superior to the other?

The programs feel quite different so different people have favorites.  I guess if you use some advanced features you may prefer one over the other.
Personally I prefer irfanview for single image viewing and manipulation, and prefer xnview when i need to search and browse a larger image collection.
And these are just 2 tools I am familiar with, I'm sure there are other good ones.
