Quirky Asian Movies
« on: September 20, 2015, 06:02 AM »
I am thinking along the lines of "quirky" feature length Asian movies but I suppose funny shorts are not forbidden in this thread.  Speaking of funny shorts in a feature length film, my first nominee is Big Man Japan.

My second nomination is anything directed by Sabu

Thirdly I recommend The Bird People of China

Edit: Yet another fun Yakuza flick, Yakuza Demon

The Japanese films seem to be easiest to remember.  Eventually I will post some Hong Kong quirkies.  :)

Full Metal Yakuza

Fallen Angels

Quirky or not.  Anything with Michelle Reis is worth a look.

Edit:  And the classic Stephen Chow flicks such as Shaolin Soccer

Don't know about quirky but a triplet of my favourite Japanese Sci-Fi are:

I don't think I ever caught a peed at those.  Thanks for posting.

If you hate "chick flicks" perhaps Castaway on the Moon may not be for you.  But I found it fun and amusing.  A fun quirky Korean romantic comedy.

I got Wicked City on DVD.  I think it took the 5th time watching before I got the drift.  Fun even if you don't know what is going on if you like strange Asian films.

All You Need is Love, a recent Shu Qi flick, is supposed to be at least mildly amusing.  It helps if you are a Shu Qi fan.  I can feel her soon moving into the category of former hot actress who plays the mother of the hot chick.  She may have a few more films in her as the lead.  But she has nothing left to prove so it's not realistic to expect much spark in the performances.

Parasyte Part 1
Parasyte Part 2

Humanity is under attack by human-mimicking flesh-eating alien parasites. One parasite bonds with his young high school student host, and he convinces the parasite to help him stop the others.

I've seen the complete Parasyte anime series - it was awesome.
Apparently the live action remake was not well received, haven't seen it myself.

Conversely, I don't watch anime at all but I enjoyed these films :)

And now for something completely different:
