-no, not any Start6/7/8/9 from Stardock. Unfortunately I have not kept any emails or History from my part of Start10's story, so I can only give you the two normal links: https://www.stardock...om/products/start10/ and "Features + Download" (incl. "Own Start8? Click "here" to find out if you qualify for Start10 upgrade pricing:")

-------------
It's the second time I am testing my licensed Clipdiary... The first time I was too upset about the default hotkey, so I soon lost patience: Ctrl+Shift+Arrow_Up/Down can in my head not be a key to use in a clipboard. Now I have finally produced the necessary amount of patience it took to change the key combination, so after a couple of years of separation, I am using Clipdiary again. Only in a couple of weeks or months will I know if I want to keep using it. I might have more clipboards than brain cells.

FYI, I don't see anything about a Last BIOS time in Windows 10, so that may not have survived.

There's specific system requirements that need to be available before it shows up from what I gather, one of them seems to be a UEFI BIOS.

The only system running W10 atm is my netbook which, like yours, is too old for UEFI, as such it doesn't show the Last BIOS time info.
My main system is still W8.1 but has a UEFI BIOS so that's where the screenshot came from, so as yet I can't precisely tell you if it occurs in W10 or not.

There may be other requirements, eg. someone mentioned GPT formatted HDD, mine are all MBR so that appears to be wrong.

This is veering off topic, but I have Windows 10 on my netbook (BIOS) and on my desktop (UEFI). The screenshot I posted above of the Task Manager was from my desktop machine with UEFI. So either that feature has been removed from Windows 10 (or just moved to somewhere else in the OS) or there are other requirements my computer doesn't meet.

  • Join.me (can't figure out how to disable launch on startup)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run -> join.me.launcher

Of course, whenever you use it, it adds it back :(

I don't run the software, but perhaps renaming the launcher (brute force) is the way to go ? (but then you'd still have to do it after every update)

Windows 10 Task Manager has a new Startup tab where you can see and enable/disable your startup items. Nice!
 (see attachment in previous post)

It doesn't e-enable it for me in Windows 10 when I disable it this way.

  • 7 Taskbar Tweaker

so I *guess* you already had it installed when you upgraded to Win 10, Tuxman? So far it has been impossible for me to install 7+ on this "clean" Win 10 of mine: "Support for Win 10 is under development". (Yes, I have donated). Or is there a trick to install it anyway?

-thanks, Tuxman. I am not trying it yet, because the feature I was hoping for, is listed as not yet implemented: When the taskbar is vertical (laptop with widescreen monitor), the mouse's moving distance from everything to everything else is unacceptable long - so to speak - so I want to change the order of certain buttons~areas.

Remembering where we are (What's living in your taskbar notification area right now?), I really am annoyed  that Microsoft on one hand forces me to look at their icons, while at the same time they prevent me from having an equally easy look at the icons from the programs that I have installed. I installed these programs, because I think they are important to me. Get it, Microsoft? No, they didn't. Maybe in a year or so they will have the time to listen?

As you can see my notifications area is small and managed. If you want to see something big, extensive( and why I use Classic Shell) look at my Start menu below.

I tested if True Launch Bar was dispensable on Windows 10 (and of course it is), but simply had to install it here as well; Life is better with TLB installed. My settings are not yet all done, but True Launch Bar is already very useful:

I know I easily can remove another 3 programs, but I don't think I ever before have had this few icons in the Notification Area:

The spoiler just shows the start menu, and gives some inkling on a few that might have been obscure, but not all.

SaverPal, Action Center, WordWeb, ESET NOD32.

I have a program that makes screen videos, but don't remember the name and don't have it installed here.

What about in the popup?  Those are the ones that I didn't recognize.  And what is SaverPal?  I tried a search... but couldn't find it other than a reference on ProcessChecker

SaverPal is a screensaver utility. If you want a copy I can send you one, I was able to find a copy online but I don't know how safe that was.

I meant from the little popup from the task notification area.  Going through your list, it didn't seem like you listed those.  And I don't use a screensaver, but thanks for the offer and the info!

Finally got round to this - I seem to have a lot in the tray... pretty much everthing here get's a thumbs-up from me though.

PopUp:
  • MBAM
  • [network/internet]

  • FileHamster (still works fine - I find I dont set it up for new jobs though, preferring Syncovery below)
  • AHK script with various bits and pieces, mainly windows management
  • FARR - by mouser
  • Listary Pro - I use it in a minimal way but still a great help
  • [Win Update]
  • Linkman Pro (bookmarks) new user, like it so far, great support
  • MSE antivirus (is it worth it :p)

Tray:
  • GridMove (windows management) - by jpaiga
  • Everything (search)
  • Note5 (has it's limitations e.g. only one undo, but great for shorter lists / overview of a couple of topics) - by Chris Gingerich
  • Process Explorer
  • Dopus
  • PopUp Quotes - by mouser
  • CintaNotes Pro - great support, constantly improving
  • MoveIt (windows management) - by MilesAhead
  • [sound]
  • Spews (wallpaper management) - by Skwire
  • Syncovery (formerly SFFS - backup and sync) great support, could probably backup your kitchen sink but can be complex
  • Screenshot Captor - by mouser
  • Clipboard Help & Spell - by mouser

Wow, what a great topic. Made me realize one huge complaint I've had about Windows. That idiotic "Notification Area" (aka the System Tray) on my computer has over 30 icons in it that vary from time to time. Whenever I go into it I end up hovering over about 29 of them to read the tooltips before I find the one I want (I guess I'm not big on memorizing what all those tiny cryptic icons represent).

I offer a suggestion / challenge to one of you killer coders to come up with an app that will allow true customization of the area - change the icon size, or best of all, add a small text description or title for each of them. I love True Launch Bar for my applications but even it doesn't help with that stupid tray!

In case you missed this, there has been some discussion of this problem area over here:

Thanks for the great tips! It looks like PS Tray Factory will fill the bill perfectly. Even more options than I could hope for. It looks like the last update was in 2010 but it works fine on Win7. $25 is a little steep for this trivial need, but hey, it supports a struggling coder!
