Program to open groups of programs.
« on: February 05, 2015, 02:12 PM »
I was wondering if there is some kind of program I can easily start a bunch of other programs with that I generally need at the same time.
Say for example when I'm doing android development. I want Android Studio to start, I want my genymotion emulator to start and I want XChat to start since that automaticaly connects me to an android chatroom.
Then when I don't need those anymore it would be cool if I could close them together also (optional).
After that I will probably want to play a game so it should start Steam and whatever else I configured.
Or when I arrive at work it should start all workspecific applications I configured + everything that's in the android development group. So basically nested grouping.

I guess I could easily make some autohotkey scripts for those (assuming AHK can detect if a program is already launched) but was wondering if there are already streamlined applications available  :)

What do you do in situations where you have to open multiple programs together?

I think that is one of the scenario's Skwire was thinking of when he published Splat for NANY 2015 :D

I was just about to recommend Splat, but Ath beat me to it.

Oh wow, that's exactly what I wanted!
Maybe I saw it and subconsciously remembered there was something like that here. Thanks for the fast reply!
Other options are still welcome :D
I'll definitely try this out tomorrow!

I always plan on joining NANY but never end up making something :(
Oh well, someday I'll get one of those mugs  :P

TaskLayout may achieve a similar effect (though I haven't tried it).

^TaskLayout is $20 and the homepage is http://www.systemgoo...m/index.php/products

Thanks for telling about SPLAT; Skwire hasn't fully update his homepage, so its "home" is not listing SPLAT.

Bin using "Windows 7 Application Launcher" for a while now. You can create different profiles for various task catergories. Comes portable too.

any more info about that? (couldn't find it - "Windows 7 Application Launcher" is a very generic name...)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone :)
I tried Splat but it doesn't seem to work for me. I'll get it to work sometime. I got it to work now. Don't save it in Program Files.
Reported my problems here.

Cool, thanks app103. I'll try it out and let you know how it goes!

I don't seem to be sold on TaskLayout. I prefer these NANY entries.

I have a group run utility with no Gui.  It simply uses an .ini file to list the main program and subprograms.  When you end the main program it offers to close the subprograms still running.  Also you should not put it under Program Files.  Windows Vista and later get progressively worse in this regard.  It doesn't like programs writing to those protected folders.  Anything with an .ini file in the same folder as the exe you should break it out to its own folder someplace.  I use C:\Utils as the root for all my small hotkey programs.

RunGroup

See the included Readme.txt for specifics.

Edit:  If you want to position the windows etc.. you can likely do it with WinSize2

Both are free.  btw ignore the stuff about domains in the readme.  Until I get another permanent setup on the web there's no sense updating all the Readme files.  :)

Hi Tomos - Had to do some searching to find the original source. Think it was here

However, the links to this software all seem dead  :(

Have attached the portable version. (scanned - no nasties found).

Just do a Google search for "7APL" and you'll find all sorts of information about it.
