LINUX: Linux Mint 16 "Petra" just released
« on: December 01, 2013, 07:32 AM »
I've been waiting for this because I wanted to see what they did with the newest version of Cinnamon. This release has version 2.0.

Detailed release announcement from the dev team can be found here.

Downloaded and ran the live 64-bit version for about an hour last night and it looks to be very solid.

You can read more about Linux Mint and find download links here.

Clem is doing an excellent job!
Couldn't even load previous version on live DVD.

Do think i'll stick to Windows 7 though (peripheral issues but also shareware hard to do without now).

In all practicality... i found ElementaryOS to be the best so far with regards to peripheral compatibility issues.
Just don't like their forum and the fact that the top panel can't be set to autohide (annoying on laptops).

Nice!

Anyone know if there will be any more work on the Debian-based flavor?

good to see that the recent allegations by an Ubuntu dev did not take away from the wind from their sails. more about that here but with more and more distros becoming an attractive alternative to existing desktop OSes, the comments are likely to be more frequent. *shrug*

IIUC, LMDE works off a semi-rolling release model that uses Mint created update packs based on Debian's "testing" repositories. So there really aren't specific LMDE versions like there are for the Ubu-based flavors of Mint. The last LMDE update pack (#7) was issued around the end of September of this year, so it looks to be still active.

Ah, thanks for the explanation -- I guess that means one starts off with an ISO and then performs at least one update.

If it's based on "Testing" I'd say there's more than one update ;)

I do an 'aptitude update/full-upgrade' every week or so and it's always huge.  And in the past couple of months, they've been obsolete-ing tons of packages.

The "update" I was referring to was the LMDE update pack -- do you do additional "from-Debian" updates as well?

Sorry I wasn't clear in my original post -- I was referring to the process of installing from scratch.

Ah, I should have been more clear as well...  I am running Debian "Testing", not Linux Mint.  I used to be a Ubuntu fan, but it has gone downhill since 9.10, IMNSHO.  I went back to Debian and I've gotten along with it so well that I intend to stay.

Though I will admit Mint looks pretty slick...

If I were running a server I'd be using Debian as well -- for non-server-related development, I've been finding Arch to be easier from the perspective of creating, installing, and uninstalling software cleanly.

I tend to use Mint via booting one of its isos, so it'd have been nicer not to have to apply an update after booting from the LMDE iso.

Wouldn't setting it up as a VM image be easier? That way, you could have a tweaked and updated clean image for software testing anytime you wanted.

When the machine in question is broken or I don't trust its content, booting from ISO seems like a better option -- also when it's someone else's PC...

Yup. That pretty much answered my question. Boot from media it is! ;D

Windows cpu was going bananas today (searchhost thingy) so i decided to give Elementary another try (for some reason tweak tool is no longer available) so i decided to go a bit deeper into LinuxMint Cinnamon - surprise! No more CPU issues.
Any tips on monitoring CPU on LM?

If i could only get that sufferin' suckatash CanonLide70 to work with LM!  :(
That's okay. Dual boot isn't all that bad.  :)

A bit of a digression...

I got to thinking whether remastering the LMDE iso with the latest update applied might be worth considering.

Has any one tried this?

I've come across a few options for remastering, but haven't tried any of them:

refracta has some relevant-looking tools
remastersys fork

@ewemoa, not too obvious!   :-[
Do hope to find the LXLE has it set up on the top right hand corner, like a transparent gadget...
BTW, Cinnamon CPU has been spiking.

'Funny' thing yesterday, CPU on Windows 7 was going tilt all day long, then when i decided to give Cimmanon another spin, it stopped!

Nice catch 40hz!
First i've seen of that webpage and such a long well done presentation too!

Other than the first glitches expected on installation, standby mode failed at first try.

Now if i can figure out how to make Cinnamon boot second to Windows... boot config is read only and i always have a hard time to remember how to get into root mode. Not easy after 50!

With Ubuntu derivatives there's seldom (if ever) any real need to run as root. At least most times. If you prefix a command with sudo (or gksudo) that will give you temporary admin privileges on anything you do with that command once you enter your password. (Ex: sudo gedit will open the text editor with root privileges.)

Might be easier for you to use Neosmart's EasyBCD as your boot profile manager. It's free for non-commercial and home use. Info and download link here.

Wow! You're certainly nix-hardcore aren't you? :tellme: ;D

If you have the technical chops, time, and the interest to do something like that, might it make sense to create your own Debian spin? It would probably be easier than trying to reverse engineer what the Mint people did and remaster from there.

Thanks for the reminders 40hz - think i might just keep LM as default.
Although i've seen a few complaints on LM blog about problems with Cinnamon 16, it has never been better as far as i can recall!
Everything is basically 100% faster than before. Yes!!

Yeah. That was my impression too. And especially obvious once I took it off a VM and installed it on real iron. In this case, 'real iron' is an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop (i5/8Gb RAM) which I inherited when the original owner (a client) tossed it because the HD went bad. I recovered it (with his permission) from the trash bin it was sitting in. Even got the power brick that went with it. After putting in a nice spankin' new 1TB HD I had sitting on the shelf, I was set to go. And all without me dorking with anything I was currently using.

Haven't had any problems (so far) with the new release or Cinnamon either. Knock wood!

Woo-Hoo! This beastie (it's huge) just might end up being my new main 'desktop" machine...
