I've started using the very helpful "Overide filename" in the post-capture dialogue.

I fill in my filename, if I then press enter -
the SC window opens with the image.

No biggee, but I'm wondering is there a way to get it to save the image but *not* open the SC window (when I press the Enter key)?

Found the solution:

I see from this thread that the Altkey works.

So I can fill in the new filename and press Alt+e and the dialogue will disapper.

Good you found a solution.  Alt+E maps to save+hide, which is why that does what you want.
I will however, add an option that says what Enter should do (save+hide vs save+show).
