SpeedDial is Opera's new tab page.

Um...what?

This is by no means new...not by a LONG way...On my phone, I have had Opera for...well...LOOOOONG before this announcement, and it has always had this feature.

The final feature, and perhaps the most significant, is dubbed Off-Road Mode. This is, essentially, Opera Mini mode; it routes requests through Opera's own servers to compress and reprocess webpages and hence reduce the amount of data you have to download.

So.....Opera Turbo?...

Seriously...what the absolute fuck is going on recently, and how in the name of all that is holy, do these "Editors" get fucking jobs?!

ARGH

I refuse to read the news any more...Shit is driving me mental.

I agree turbo is 4 or 5 year old feature and so is speed dial, except that dial supports touch interface now lol.

Speed dial has supported touch for quite a while. It really is a great feature and certainly beats the way Google defiled it in Chrome.

I believe you may be reading this differently than the author intended... I see this a a statement of fact, that SpeedDial is a feature that Opera uses as its new-tab page. ie a new blank tab displays SpeedDial, as opposed to the feature being new.

Darn language. I vote we all start being a bit more precise and mathematical and using brackets, braces, and parentheses for clarity. e.g.

SpeedDial is Opera's open parentheses new tab close parentheses page.

Which could be clearly distinguished from:

SpeedDial is Opera's new open parentheses tab page close parentheses.

(etc.)

:P

(English is simply horrible when it comes to clarity and being unambiguous in certain cases. You need to be overly verbose for what should be simpler. I believe Russian has some nifty features that help in these areas.)

Ca'n't help but wonder...is it really so much that WebKit rules...or more that Opera succumbs? ;D

Only if you're the sort who thinks 'succumbing' is the same thing as 'submitting.' :P

Hahahaha~! ;D

Ok, well, that's not quite what I meant.

I was thinking more about how Russian has inflection that makes the word order unimportant.

e.g. In English, this is clear:

John watched Mary.

However, in Russian, that really makes no sense as there's no inflection in English. So:

John watched Mary = Mary watched John

However, in Russian, you'd have inflection/particles/whatever to indicate the subject and object and all that stuff that we don't have in English.

You can think of the few examples that still exist in English that inflect, e.g.:

foot - feet
goose - geese
I - me - mine - my
etc.

Google going its own way, forking WebKit rendering engine

kitAndChrome.png

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/04/google-going-its-own-way-forking-webkit-rendering-engine/

Until now, Google has rigorously tracked the WebKit project, both integrating patches made by other WebKit developers and pushing its own changes made during the course of Chrome's development back upstream.

Linus Upson, vice president of Engineering at Google, and Alex Komoroske, product manager on the Open Web Platform team, told us that the costs of sharing code now outweighed the advantages. There is considerable complexity in WebCore that is there to support WebKit2 features that Google does not want or use...

Even if they are right, this proprietarization of browsers is just exhausting. So now I'm getting lost: will the browser world fracture between Apple's version of Webkit because of their whole Store policy, or Google's because it will likely gain "gmail optimizations" etc?

Elsewhere Mozilla was developing something new again.

Blecch.

It has become tedious, perhaps even exhausting, to those of us that follow such things.
