Sleeping Solves Another Bug~! :D
« on: December 12, 2012, 11:50 PM »
I've been working on some new stuff, and have had a bit of a rough time as things were falling apart badly. So... when all else fails... Take a snooze!

I laid down for a while, envisioned the code in my head, and just rested.

A while later, I went back to the code, started walking through it, and lo and behold, I had the answer. :D

Anyone else ever do this? Step back. Chill. Meditate. Come back and solve a critical issue?

Yep. Cryptic Answer. Examples go back to the 1700's : )

Not certain I'd call it meditation (dunno that I'd know how  :P), but otherwise that scenario is very familiar - has been a lifesaver at times.

I usually go for a walk rather than snooze, but it often does help taking a few steps back and letting your mind flow freely.

+1

Been doing that on both software and hardware issues: Either get some sleep or make a long car-drive (used to drive an hour from work to home, solved a lot of issues during that hour, never had traffic issues, luckily, drove on a highway ;))

Yes, sleeping/sobering up seem to have equal success rates. ;)

Even back when I was a mechanic, I'd frequently sit back smoke a cigarette and let my mind drift when at an impasse. This strangely allowed answers to (seemingly) fall from the sky. In reality I think it just a case of forcing ones self to forget where they're at so that on reassessment you have the opportunity to spot what was being messed. It's a forest/trees cure.

+1! Waking almost always works the charm for me.

That and/or 20 minutes listening to Bach, Teleman, or Gregorian Chant.

Total brain reset.

I was having a hard time wrapping my head around something specific in JavaScript a year or two ago... I just couldn't understand how it worked (and now it's been so long since I did anything with JavaScript, I can't remember what it was called). I got discouraged and stopped working with JavaScript for a few months. I was complaining to someone about the thing I was having trouble understanding, and he asked me what it was, so I went to the book I had been reading so I could show it to him and as I read through it again it all clicked!

Nothing new here - restart can be productive.
Well, such good results are the only thing that justifies going for smoke at work…
