Keyboard shortcut of the day
« on: November 21, 2012, 03:33 AM »
I want to nominate ctrl-backspace for keyboard shortcut of the day. I have been using pcs for close to 20 years now and never realised that you could remove the previous word using ctrl-backspace!

Any unusual shortcuts you think we should know about?

Me neither - that's a great one.
I was always very impressed by how in the early days of desktop, everything would be done with shortcuts/keyboard. (I know they had no choice.)

These related ones are probably known by everyone:
Ctrl+Arrow to skip back forward one or more words in direction of the arrow
Ctrl+Shift+Arrow to select one or more words in direction of the arrow
Ctrl+Home or +End to move cursor to beginning or end of text.
Ctrl+Shift+Home or +End to select text between cursor and the beginning or the end of text.

Another one that's been around for awhile (and is probably seldom used) is now imperative if you want to logoff of (not disconnect from) an RDP session to a Windows 8 or Server 2012 machine is Ctrl + Alt + End. I've been using it and Ctrl + Alt + Break (toggle Remote Desktop full screen mode (So the Win key works on the remote box)) quite a bit lately on a Client's 2012 Server.

Like to remember Ctrl+Del along with Ctrl+Backspace.  A bit of a bummer when I find apps that don't support them...

Shift+Insert is the same as Ctrl-V (Paste)

The 'Apps' key (between right Alt and Ctrl) gives you the context menu, but it wont toggle the *§$%* thing. So you have to use your mouse to click elsewhere if you raise the menu by mistake;

or:

Shift+F10 toggles the context menu :)

I used AHK to change the Apps key to Shift+F10 (forgot to add it to this machine - just did, seems to work as intended)-

Code: Autohotkey [Select]
  1. Appskey::+F10

I'm always amazed that so few people know these:

- Ctrl-Shift-Esc to launch Task Manager
- Win-Break to open System Properties
and much more Win related shortcuts,

and (not really a keyboard shortcut, though)
- double-click on titlebar to maximize/restore an app

I have found this one to be helpful in multi-platform contexts

Definitely handy.

- Win-Break to open System Properties

Didn't know this one.

I didn't use this one much until recently when I discovered an app that has a lot of problems (on one machine at least) with drawing (text gets garbled / shifted / etc.).  As a quick fix, I double-click on the title bar and repeat.  Often this leads to a fixed view of things.

forgot about that option when posting :-[
FWIW, the history:
I'm left-handed and am usually drawing with the mouse and trying to hit a Ctrl+Otherkey shortcut and I catch the corner of the apps key - then, using the keyboard, I would have to leave the mouse to hit escape, or hit it with my right hand, both of which are a pain, especially if it keeps happening.
For a long time I had the apps key 'converted' to the Control key but I missed it in other software - actually that was how I came across dc, trying to find out how to do that.

- Win-Break to open System Properties

For a long time, I didn't know there was any other way to get to that.  ;D

I'm not left-handed, but I use a trackball with that hand -- and as a trackball stays put, it turns out I can reach the Escape key with my left thumb :)

I find that Control+Escape has served me well over the years -- I wonder if it does anything in Windows 8...

Don't forget the Ctrl + Ins to 'Copy'

There's one for 'Cut' too but I forget!

Just found that the Paste, Copy, and Cut ones appear to be via:

  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Common_User_Access#Description

May be there are some other things worth knowing there too...

My favorite one is ctrl+z. Basically it's a an undo for last text block/word/selection.  :-*

And, in some instances, Ctrl+Z can return/undo a deleted file or directory .

I wonder is there any alternative for Ctrl+Z?
(my keyboard is QWERTZ so the Z is not so easily accessible ....)

Remap Ctrl+Y key to act like Ctrl+Z?

ReMap keys W7

Haven't tested it but it looks promising.

Um... Bad idea. Ctrl+Y is the (default) re-do compliment to Ctrl+Z's un-do
