EXACT duplicate photo file finder
« on: January 23, 2012, 05:21 PM »
I just wanted to let everyone know it's out there. It's called Fast Duplicate File Finder. I'm using it to find EXACT duplicate photos on my machine. It's lightning quick, thorough, nicely designed, novice-user friendly, etc. Unlike the others I've tried this one is set to match photos at 100% match by default.  This means the search slows down if you set it to find similar or close matches. But who wants that? I have edited photos I want to keep and it ignores them when set at 100% match. It's great!   :D

This address will guide you to it         http://www.mindgems....ile-Finder-About.htm

You can also read about what isn't included with the free version, OS requirements, etc. My only interest was the EXACT match function and that comes with the free version.

I quit looking when I found this one but if antidup.net is faster I'll switch... thanks   :)

A while back I released a very simple exact duplicate finder:

http://renegademinds...bid/122/Default.aspx

There is source code available there as well. If I remember properly, I licensed it under the WTFPL.

Hi Renegade. I think I tried one of your other dup finders before I tripped over this one. You probably know the one. The window had two BIG scan pics in the middle and lists at top and bottom? Unfortunately I wasn't able to customize it (i.e. make the TOO BIG pics smaller) and the lists bigger without maxing the window.   :(    Also couldn't set it to exact match (100%) which is what I really wanted.

To me, at least, duplicate means EXACT DUPLICATE. Other than a professional photographer who would be wanting to scan for pics with subtle changes?

I don't remember    does yours find duplicate audio or music? Does it scan network computers? How about flash or CD/DVD's?  Diskettes?

BTW  You may want to include your Exact Duplicate version link, on the site where I found your above mentioned one, because there are a few other people out there who may be looking for the EXACT duplicate function.   :)

P.S. I watched your demo... how many files were in the tree folders you selected?  Two or two thousand?

No. It's just a very simple one to scan directories. There are no sexy bells and whistles on it. It's supposed to be very simple to use. (Not sure if I nailed it or not...)

I had tried to at least make it multi-threaded, but there are issues with that under the hood in Windows, so I just gave up on that. (It would have taken too much time that I didn't have.)

:-[ Sorry for the slam Renegade. Maybe you could add some more-user-friendly stuff to the version I tried. Like maybe making the sample scan pics smaller (there seemed to be a lot of unused space around both) and stacking them to one side? Or add an Auto Select to just the 100% matches?   :)

I don't have a clue about how to write or create a program, much less change an existing one, so these are just Novice-User suggestions.   :-[

I envy people who can create their own programs and this includes you! If I had just a fraction of your knowledge and experience I wouldn't have to constantly surf the web looking for solutions or answers. (Hopefully free but not always)   :(

Not at all! :) There's more wrong with it than just that. :)

The large space at the top of the picture is to display long file paths. It's not an optimal solution.

The pictures are all instantly resized for that limited space and centred. Load speeds are on the right.

The only thing really going for it is that it is simple and direct. There's nothing remotely confusing in it and no complex options. Well, that and the source code there is commented quite well (IIRC).

No. But I have learned quite a bit about the mess there... experimentation with weaponized warfare, etc. etc.

The war museum in Ho Chi Minh city is a very difficult thing to see. It will about bring you to tears.

@crabby3 - Woo-hoo! I see your recommendation made it into the forum!

I took a minute to download your suggestion and plan on giving it a try this weekend. I have a large library of my sister's old digital artwork (she's a graphic designer) that I want to migrate off my servers and over to long-term storage. I know the folders are loaded with dups, so anything that can help reduce the number of extra images will be a godsend.

Thx for sharing.

Yeah, 40hz, thanks to you heading me in the right direction.   :)

I'm mostly impressed by the speed.  I wish my avast antivirus scans ran that fast.   :(   Oh... wait... maybe they do.  :D
