NANY 2012 Release: Web Link Captor, aka LL Robot
« on: September 06, 2011, 07:23 AM »
NANY 2012 Entry Information

One of the things I will release for NANY will be a small desktop application, temporarily named LL Robot Web Link Captor.

Nothing very fancy (It's fancy  ;D ) but I think it will be useful to bloggers.  It was inspired by App's father's blog on jazz music, but it has nothing to do with Jazz.

I'll post a beta as time approaches.

Yesterday I sat down and planned out the application and figured out all of the unresolved issues I had regarding User Interface, so I'm pretty much ready to start coding.

dMbTiger -- we shall see soon, hopefully in the next week or so during testing; it's hard for me to anticipate how good a job the tool is going to do with it until we try.

One thing i'm still contemplating is whether to make a pure native windows app, or whether to go cross-platform and write it in something like python with a thin user interface wrapper..

Considering the potential usefulness, a cross-platform app would probably be very appropriate. BTW are you planning to make the target site a fixed element or a variable the user can insert (which would be potentially very useful, since the information needed for retrieval may be on different sites. :greenclp:

Completely configurable in both the engines/sites supported and output formats.

Update: The first set of PYTHON alpha backend scripts for LLRobot is complete and working.

So it looks like this is going to be at least cross-platform in the backend code (I'll probably write a windows-only GUI front end as part of NANY to make it easy to use).

I'll have a better idea how it will work for me once I get my hands on a copy:  when do you think you'll have a working copy available?

The alpha version is now working.. Needs a ton of tweaking and error reporting but it does work.

I *agonized* over the user interface for this tool, and in particular how to solve a nasty dilemma involving batching operations..  I hope the program is usable without driving people insane.

I'll be making a screencast video to show how to use it.

Alpha version is in testing by my top alpha beta tester as we speak.

The "LL" in "LLRobot" must be the key...... now what could those two Ls stand for?

LL = Lusty Lion?

Ooops....that brainfart only produced something similar to the Ubuntu naming meme.   :P
