mouser thanks for your nice words.
+1 :)

[1] when clicking on [selected] there will be a dropdown which will display the categories and when a category is selected, the last picture and question posted in that category will appear in the slideshow. I'm afraid if there will be tens of categories the dropdown will be annoying being too high. I'm also not sure about what to do with the "topics" there.

[2] I think a black background will not match the rest of the design and think about the fact that there could be uploaded pictures with small sizes. Big slideshows looks great due to the large size of the images

e.g: buildinternet.com/project/supersized/default.php

[3] in the picture, there is no header and footer. I'm a little bit confused about how people will get on the previous page or homepage.
(Adi, I numbered your points.)

The main idea of the slideshow is to focus on the images (and questions) with as few distractions as possible.

[1] misunderstanding: I meant these to be links to the Categories & Topics pages.
I'm not even sure if that's a good idea. Maybe best leave it out completely.

[2] Point taken. Thoughts: A black background is commonly used for slideshows - think of Flickr and Picassaweb. They are otherwise white background so maybe it doesnt clash so much because of that?
The blue background could be used successfully - but only if it is kept very minimal IMO.

[3] Normally you get out of a slideshow by clicking on the close button - if that said [Home] instead of [x close] I think it would be clear (?)
Re header & footer:
Slideshow is about images. They have to be the focus.
Say we used the layout of the individual question page and put the controls beneath the image - many people would have to scroll down to see the full image or to get to the controls. That's why I dont want the header.
Also dont want the header or footer becasue they distract from the images.

~ I'll try doing a mockup of a blue page with the links across the top and see how that looks.

I think that looks very good

Queries/comments:

1) is the question left out completely? If not, where could it go?

2) the [CATEGORIES] button above the image could be left out - if the header is going to be included

3) EDUCATION there is a category - that could be left out as well I think

would this be possible:

[...]
would this be possible:

or could the question be shown as a tooltip?

Then click on image to go to answer it / see other answers.

yes! definitely.

The question will appear with a nice ontop effect on the image... somewhere in the upper left part of it.

.
there's a small "i" in the upper left part for displaying the question and images link directly to the question's page.

we're almost done

they're good there, they move the footer down a bit which is good.
They are nice and discreet too as text links
Looks great now, very clean - I like it.

that's great.
I've just discovered a small bug when adding friends. They aren't displayed in the public profile pages. We'll solve this right away.

answered :)

ps. the slide show is a really nice interface.. if you can get the questions showing for each photo at the top of the photo, you might actually make that the default view.

I find it hard to comment on the colours thing. While I realize I haven't spoken up till now, I'm not personally a fan of the light blue background your website has going as a theme, and the logos as they are aren't even set to that colour background, making it even harder to make a right decision.

On a white bg, the greish one looks best. The other two.. I don't know. The colours aren't all that bad, but I just don't like the chemistry the way I see it atm. Dropshadows are overdone imo and I'd recommend taking it out to look less cheap. :)

True.
The whole thing happened so quickly that there wasnt much time to spend on design - well actually I spent a share of late nights in that role, but, the fact is - while I have some experience with layout - I'm not a designer...

I actually like the blue myself. I've gotten mixed responses from others about it.

I'm happy with the design at any rate - there is a version for the site too - colours would definitely have to be changed, but I've got to install illustrator first...

EDIT/ ahh, I see you also posted on-site worstje

Yeah I made an account. :) The place definitely needs OpenID though, and when I registered while posting it didn't refresh. So I ended up hitting Post a second time... which I think due to the use of Ajax made it look like it finally posted for the first time while in actuality it was a double-post that was hidden from me.

think about what happens on all the forums and in general any website where visitors must login to post something :

1. you land on a page from google or any other referral;
2. you read the topic and then you want to reply, you add the message or you're directed to a registration page;
3. you must login to your e-mail and confirm your account
3.1 if the e-mail comes in time and you're not playing football already
3.2 if the e-mail is coming to your inbox folder and didn't get rejected by spam filters
4. login to the website when clicking on the confirmation link
5. search the topic again using the annoying and too complex/advanced search form of the website
6. navigate through tens of other similar topics found till finding the desired topic that got your attention before step 1
7. think again what you wanted to post, if you still have the words in your mind
8. finally post and submit your idea(s)

so... the solution for posting ideas that we have at askpic.com is made of 2-3 clicks and even if you click twice the "submit" button, you're right... with the risk of being a little bit annoying for some advanced users, it is by far more efficient for any user because basically in the background are happening all the steps mentioned above. :)
