Many people were extremely disappointed when Agnitum stopped supporting Outpost Firewall Free, especially considering Outpost firewall is dotTech recommended. Well, friends, worry no longer. Last week Agnitum released Outpost Security Suite Free, the freeware version of Outpost Security Suite Pro.

Previously Outpost Firewall Free provided users with top-notch firewall services. Outpost Security Suite Free takes those top-notch firewall services and combines them with anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-spam features into one program.

Hmmm... How is it? I think I'm mostly interested in the anti-spam. I've not had time to wrestle with Spamassassin yet... :(

I already have the PRO suite, so I have no intention of trying the free version.

Well, that tells me enough to know that you think enough of the product to use the pro version.

Has anyone else tried the free version?

I also use OSS Pro, (I am really glad I got their deal 2 years ago - lifetime updates for 3 computers :D ), so no need for me to be installing the free version at home.

But as I visit the relatives whose computers I'm the defacto technician on, then the strange mixes of ZA, Avast!, Avira and AVG will quietly be replaced - it will be so much easier when they ring up and ask a question about, "Got this requester from Outpost, what does it mean?"

Rather than, "Got this requester from [ZA|Avast!|AVG|<insert other firewall/anti-something>], what does it mean?" or "How do I do <insert operation> in ZA?"

I have this hanging on my wall beside my desk:

Tech sites and technical software is a strange combination. They love to highly recommend in their "reviews" yet give no information, leave out information, misunderstand information because they know too little and cant be bothered to find out - since they will not come off as too technical to their core user base. If people can sniff a giveaway around the corner nobody complains, is probably not wise either :)

This might be interesting to inform about http://free.agnitum.com/learn-more.php or a quote from a moderator saying

The free version is an inducement to obtain the pro, not a replacement.

more so since Agnitum have the idea this is the first free SUITE.

Wouldn't it be better hanging on the wall beside their desks?

I sent my parents, (courtesy of xkcd):

Listen. I hate you. Muahahahah~! Love it~! :)

But yes, it would be better beside their desks... Unfortunately houses don't come with remote desktop, telnet, or SSH to let you remotely install things. :(

I have a key for Online Armor ++ (Antivirus and Firewall), but the license is now about to expire. The Renewal Price for one year, 1 PC, is $45.- , which is making me even more happy ("really glad") with my lifetime license for Agnitum OSS Pro :-)
