VMWare Server & VMWare Workstation 5 are not the same.  Basically the (now) free VMWare Server is the former VMWare ESX.  It requires a Host Operating System to run; GSX does not, it runs on the Raw Hardware.

I said that backwards by the way... ESX runs on the hardware... GSX run inside and OS.
