Running this seems to break windows-key functionality on Windows 7 (can someone verify?)

Win + anything in particular? It may be app-specific of course. I did do some general fixing a while back but if you can find something reproducible I'll look into it right away  :Thmbsup:

I have been running this for about 5 days and so far all it has done is build an autocomplete list containing 14 words and make some occasional beeping sounds. Am I missing something?

Sounds like you might be :)

I think that the autopopup does not work for everyone when the app is minimized to the system tray. Maybe you could turn that off and give 'er another try please, till I can track that down.

And of course the idea is you would likely add some Replacement texts too (acronyms for longer phrases that you'd like the program to add for you as you type)

Just a few I have set up:
pov -> point of view
jic -> just in case
mol -> more or less
utd -> up-to-date
etc etc etc

If they don't work either, please let me know, since it sounds like something ain't right there

Ok, now it is working, but the popup is nowhere near my cursor. It's quite a bit above and to the left.

What application are you running it with?

What application are you running it with?

Firefox & notepad2

I also noticed in firefox, that when it pops up and what I am typing isn't one of the options, sometimes it doesn't close itself when I continue typing, and will linger on the screen after I hit the post button on friendfeed or facebook.

Win + anything in particular? It may be app-specific of course. I did do some general fixing a while back but if you can find something reproducible I'll look into it right away  :Thmbsup:

I did some testing and here are the results:

If main program window is open and active, then everything works.
If the window is open but inactive, then winkey to trigger the start menu does not work. Win+[anything else] still works though.
If the window is minimized to tray, then weird stuff happens. Sometimes the win key would stop working all together, sometimes it would get stuck in the down position.

Hope this helps!

Build 66 uploaded.

Minor changes, with a bigger release coming up shortly, to sweep up quite a few issues that you folks have reported recently.

New Features

    * Improved Splash screen. Appears and updates more smoothly.
    * Replacements always take precedence over Completions (i.e. if you type a Replacement that happens to also match a Completion, you get the Replacement text)
    * Fuzzy matching can now be disabled altogether (set it to zero in the options).
    * Fuzzy matching is now more selective about what is a close match.

Bug Fixes

    * Improved handling of shift keys - smoother text selection, and avoids the 'skip' where you may sometimes deselect all text unexpectedly.
    * Fuzzy items no longer appear multiple times in the pop-up.
    * Fixed the case-sensitive feature for Replacements.
    * Pop-up window closes if you switch applications.

Taking it for a spin.

(You might want to change the line:
Download Link   * Auspex1.0.0.65.zip (3107.77 KB - downloaded 57 times.)
in your original post as the link to .66 is quite far down and rather smaller.)

Well, I hate to tell you but .66 isn't working well for me.

At the moment, it's sitting maximized with all its menus greyed out and inaccessible. This comes and goes but I don't yet see why.

Also, it's fighting with AllMyNotes (see elsewhere on DC) which previous versions did not do. It'll work for a bit and then block all typing.

Further, an autocomplete which is "Ripley IV" turns up as Rippley IV when I type "Rip" and hit 0 (or Tab) to select what I want. Similarly, Martin gets me Marrtin, and so on.

Also;
  • launch
  • hit close button to minimize
  • restore
  • hit close button to minimize doesn't work again.
The bad news that it's only sometimes and I can't pin down why. This one's really not very important.

Happy Christmas, chum  :o

My goodness me - and this was supposed to a simple mini-update! I'll try running that AllMyNotes thing and see if that triggers all this stuff. I have Auspex running literally the whole day and never see this stuff  :(

Makes me think there must be some other gremlin loose in my system.
The dead menus occur on first run of Auspex. Closing and relaunching it seems to fix that. I thought that was one you'd fixed but I probably misremember.
Have enabled a new auto-complete though Aus[tab]$#^!pex.  :)
I'm getting the double letter effect in my text editors also. My reference to AllMyNotes is best left aside.

Double letters: Any autocomplete that I set up has the double letter. I just created a few to see. Also, I just realized that almost all (if not all) of the vocabulary that I fed Auspex from files has gone. Looks as if  something bad has happened here. I'll pull a pre .66 from backup, see if that's okay and if it is I'll update that to .66.

Pulled .65 from backup — Auto-completes working fine.
Updated to .66 — double letters on any of my own (non-imported) auto-completes, e.g. Billl and Ben.

Well what on Earth........?  :o

It's fine here, I promise you. I'll upload a b67 very shortly, and would be terribly grateful if you could let me know about that. Maybe I created a duffer somehow, then fixed it without even noticing. (I might be clever like that, who knows?)

No, but not because of you :)

Build 67 uploaded. If you still get any issues, can give me a step-by-step please?

This is what I did just a second ago, and it seems fine:

1. Click New
2. Entered 'pinhead' in the Name field
3. Changed Action to Auto-Complete

Switch to (say) Notepad. Type 'I am a pinh<tab>' and sure enough, I am a pinhead appears. (I have a trigger string length of 4)

Okay, I have it.

Try entering a proper noun or a name.
Something between .65 and .66 makes capitals screw up the output.

This is why I was getting Billl and Ben in my earlier example.

pinhead -> pinhead
Pinhead -> Pinnhead (trigger on 3)
Pinhead -> Pinhhead (trigger on 4)

Build 69

Bug Fixes

    * Completions with Capital Letters now complete correctly
    * Pop-up window still pops up when Auspex is minimized to the tray

Pinnheaded it down  :Thmbsup:

-cranioscopical (December 19, 2010, 01:58 PM)

I should really stop using that term. I have a bad habit of using phrases in forums and emails that would just imply gentle levity if heard with my tone of voice, but if read by a bad-tempered recipient without the context of timbre, are enough to trigger a serious hissy fit.

I refer, of course, to the infamous "does Brenda need to be cattle-prodded" incident of last year  :D

Anyway! Thank you for letting me know that it's ok again. I shall assume you were teasing me by showing two "n's" in pinhead there  :P

Now I can focus on the last missing features.

Ha ha! Felt like I was dealing with one, by the end ;)

But I was just jovially trying to chivvy someone along.
