Alexis and I both want to offer our condolences. Losing a feline family member of 19 years has got to be hard.

Best.

Very sorry to hear this Carol. I immediately thought of when my beloved cat of 19 years passed away many years ago, and was shocked to see how much your Titch looked like her when I saw the pictures! I dearly love tortoise shells. You have my deepest sympathies.

sorry to hear that. 19 years - that was a good life though.

Thanks guys - appreciated. It is sad to see her sister (also 19) sniffing around and wondering where she has gone. This is the first day in her life that Titch hasn't been there :-(

I'm so sorry Carol.. It is unfair in life that such friends should be taken away from us.  But she was very lucky to have you as her protector and friend for so long.

Losing a pet leaves a big hole in one's life.
It's a small consolation that the life was long and happy, thanks to you.
She could have lived with somebody else and missed out on so much that you gave her.

Cranioscopical is right - 19 years is a good long life and I'm sure she was loved and cared for, and I'm sure she knew it and appreciated it.

Still, the vacuum that losing a pet creates in your life is vast. My deepest condolences on your loss.

It's sad Carol...
They're beautiful cats. I think every cat is beautiful - but they have especially lovely colouring

Thanks again for your kind comments. I'm off to bed to see if I can get some sleep tonight. It all finished yesterday at nearly midnight so I really didn't sleep much.

My condolences :rip:. Last year I lost my dog that had nearly the same colors. I wish he could become 19 ... 13 years were too short for me.

I am so sorry, Carol. I lost my cat a few months ago and I'm still not over it or can talk about it so I know how you feel.

Wish I could say it gets easier in time, but it hasn't for me.

Things are getting easier (though there are still bad moments).

For example on Friday I was eating some fish and gave some to Crackers. Normally there is a scramble for such treats and Crackers looked very confused that she had a free run at it. Rather than eat the fish she wandered out to the bottom of the stairs and started a loud series of cries as if to say "come on Titch there's something nice to eat". It was truly pathetic and heart breaking. Since then she has been on my bed day and night - something she hasn't done for years.

Carol,

My family will try to send some good cat karma your way today. Pudems, Chico, and Alaska felt the disturbance in the feline force the other day. Our condolences.

Now her sister Crackers has gone to join Titch. Her kidneys were shot and last night she lost the ability to coordinate her back legs and so kept staggering and falling over. Even so she remained cheerful and affectionate to the last moment and ate a hearty breakfast (albeit semi prone with me feeding her). Enough was enough and the vet let go to the long rest in a very dignified manner.

She would have been 20 in May - seems very sad she missed that landmark birthday.

I am going to miss them both terribly and have had to start on the horrible task of clearing away kitty clutter from the house.

I will have cats again in the future but I am going to leave it a while so that I can travel without worrying about kittens trashing the place while I am away.

It did strike me as a lovely way for life to end - no pain and suffering just go to sleep. Its a shame that it is illegal to help humans but also illegal NOT to help pets in the way in the UK.

It's always sad when we lose an animal. We set ourselves up for some heartbreak when we start out.
After a respectful period of common sense you'll begin again.

Birthdays have only the signifcance that we attach to them.
Twenty years was a good long life; Crackers was especially fortunate to be in an ideal home.

Same here in the US - But being humane to each-other is (i guess) too much to ask of our species...

Sorry for your loss. My wife is taking one of our dogs (17yr old Boston Terrier) to the vet today to discuss his current "quality-of-life".

You have my sincere sympathy - it is not an easy thing to do and it isn't easy afterwards.

Im so sorry to hear about your cat Carol.  But as Chris said, she was one of the luckiest cats to have such a good and caring home and someone who loved her.  Not much more one can ask for in this life, except perhaps to have lots of time to contemplate and cogitate on the mysteries of the universe, and after almost 20 years I'm sure Crackers came up with some profound theories about such things.

;D If she did she never told me.

She was a lovely character but always reminded me of a cross between Winnie the Pooh (the bear of little brain) and the Dish of the Day (H2G2).

The two of them together were fascinating - both from the same litter so exactly the same genetics but Titch (who was the runt of the litter) was into absolutely everything and had a real intelligence, Crackers was almost the opposite - fascinated by her sister she could watch for hours.

She was called Crackers because as a kitten she used to love top chase butterflies in the garden (that year we had a plague of cabbage whites so she caught lots). She leaped around the garden like a mad thing with a spring in the tail. In the last 10 years she has steady become more and more stately!
