Mainly because SO is fast, small, and can handle MS Office files that are more complicated than a single paragraph of text in Times New Roman .

I use both under Linux and Windows.  I generally prefer Softmaker for most day to day writing use. It's lighter on its feet and feels more intuitive to me than Libre does. At least in its present form. I will use Libre if I'm getting into mail merges or long complex docs.

Just a matter of picking a preferred tool for the job. I'd guess most people coming off MS Office will prefer the feel of SoftMaker over Libre.

That seems a strange question. You seem to be assuming that the two applications are equivalent, or maybe that there should only be one alternative to Microsoft Office.

I can tell you that OpenOffice (and thus I assume Libre Office) is very different from Softmaker Office. OOo is a very heavy-weight program, and sometimes suffers from performance problems. It frequently does a truly awful job of importing Microsoft files (does it even support the .docx and .xlsx formats?). And it has its own UI philosophy, which some folks may like but others not.

In contrast, Softmaker's product is very lightweight, running well on my crappy ancient notebook. One of its chief goals is handling Microsoft files with fidelity, and I think it achieves this better than any other application (save Microsoft, obviously). And its user interface is quite conventional, which some people may not like, but I find makes it easier, particularly when it's only used occasionally.

And for $5, if one has even the slightest preference, what the heck?

upgrade from 2008 version? (if so, you can get that for free - it's mentioned in the thread here about Softmaker 2012 beta)

You do get occasional offers to upgrade to the Softmaker version (which has additional stuff I've never used so cannot comment on). Not sure how the new standard/pro 2012 version will be approached, but presume again there will be occasional offers.

Hi Folks,

I have a serial # from a previous promotion for Softmaker 2010, but I have no idea how I could implement it.  The trial does not have a registration capability and it takes you to the website instead.  

Apparently they send you a different download than the trial after a purchase ?  And if you have not kept that hand, you have to hassle.

Clearly I could spring for the $5, but it is the principle of the thing that concerns me.

I wrote this but then realised I was writing about Softmaker Office - as opposed to AShampoo (Softmaker) Office:

You get a download link per email, and it stays active - the link from my purchase of April 2010 is still active. (Not sure what happens when the next version comes out.)

Hi Folks,

The problem I have with Ashampoo is their reputation for springing toolbars. Yes, we can avoid it pretty easily, but apparently they do not take the most gracious approach, based on the Giveaway of the Day conversations.  It is sort of a matter of principle and preference, and I do have AbiWord or Atlantis or something.

Note: I do not particularly mind the Ashampoo email barrage. You can get off it, or filter it, easily.

I'll watch for the next native Softmaker option that is very low $, I think they do some stuff occasionally. Apparently the same software, just different branding. I sent a request to Softmaker about a couple of things, including the status of my existing serial number and how it would be applied.

IIRC the best Softmaker offers that I've gotten (for current versions of Softmaker office), were upgrade offers from Ashampoo (Softmaker know when you buy from Ashampoo):
20-something euros, but worth it I thought.
(I dont use any Ashampoo software any more, not on principle or anything - it just kind of happened that way. Guess I dont respond well to their approach.)

Softmaker do very cheap academic offers (student/teachers for around 15 euro, you do have to prove your "status").

As said above, there is a difference between the two but I think it's related to scripting which is way above my capabilities anyway.
